After reading a bazillion threads on the NEX Store and following the forum wars since the beginning, it's clear some serious lines in the sand were drawn. Those who want it, those who don't, and those who want more affordable options.
My question is, why does everything have to cost money? Why not find some common middle ground?
Why can't a player acquire specific kinds of clothing rewards through other means such as the LP store, taking part in a certain number of incursions, or even as an Epic Arc mission reward? For instance, for 10,000 LP you can buy a t-shirt with the Caldari Navy logo on it. Or a shirt saying "I survived my first Incursion!" for the new player trying out new content.
These clothes would not appear on the store, and store clothing would never be offered as a reward.
Relegate most of the options to the NEX Store, but toss out a few carrots here and there as a means to incentivize potential consumers to buy "higher quality" or "exclusive" goods from the store, or from other players per usual.
When you give your players options, they won't feel like they're being taken advantage of or screwed, and they would be more willing to shell out money or ISK for the store clothing.
Not everything should appear with a price tag.
My .02 ISKies anyway.

Agreed. The difference between NEX and any other form of micro-transactions I've personally witnessed in every other MMO is that there is an in-game alternative to acquire said goods.

Because CCP wants money. The whole NeX thing is MT for profit, and supposedly development revenue.
And it is real money. Somebody has to spend real money in order to buy the PLEX then sell the PLEX for isk and on and on to AUR blah blah blah.

As has been pointed out already there is a way to turn LP into AUR. ItÆs a cumbersome vector, but it IS there.
As to why that vector is so convoluted, itÆs simple and a direct answer to your topic line. CCP wants money. Real life money. The route from real money to goods is simpler and more direct than the route of LP or isk to goods. That means there is some pressure to use the simpler route and thus more likelihood that CCP will get the money directly.

Nah. If it were, they would have set normal MT prices.
The NeX is about bleeding PLEX from the economy and reducing CCP's financial liability. While it may have roughly the same effect, it is not really about profit and revenue. ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. Can anyone explainà aw screw it, let's just do it! What could go wrong?ö ù ÇÇP |

I would like to see AUR collected via LP or even buy clothes from the LP store. Or even clothes that drop from faction ships that are branded in their colours so to speak.
I know CCP are wanting players to make their own clothes but they will be moderated by CCP which means they will probably set the price also.
I still can't believe that they think people will buy the Nex items at the prices they have set with actual money other than ISK converted into PLEX. I am happy with the free clothes we got until the prices start to fall.

A precedent of sorts has already occured. Those that paid a PLEX to get access to the high bandwidth footage from FanFest got a free Quafe T-shirt.
True, in this example they were still getting a PLEX cashed in, but the mechanizm appears to be there to get items from non-NeX "purchases".
===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |
