I am quick to inform prospective pilots that EVE is IMHO not a simple PC game, but rather a full blown hobby. the slow-paced nature and time consuming, rewarding activities; so many of which are not based in combat which adds depth to an already massive scope.
I started EVE back in Nov. '03. The month before I found out about EVE for the first time. I spent every day looking up the backstory, technical requirements and so forth. I bought Earth & Beyond to sate me until I got my early Christmas present. Ahh, they nailed WiS but not much else! :)
Early November I made my toon and overlooked my Velator n00b crate in the hangar. I held my breath as I pressed the undock button. That's what I remember the best, what EVE is all about for me: immersion within a vast, beautiful galaxy. A place where I could make a difference, or choose not to. The complete freedom from RPG classes and their many cliches. A place to call home, wherever I may roam. Looking at my tiny craft leaving the safe arms of the UoC school and into the all-encompassing mystery of the cosmos with the haunting yet enticing soundtrack in the background is the foremost awe-striking memory I have in my 20+ years of gaming. And yes, widescreen mode was an option back then.
The atmosphere is what really draws me to EVE. For one, the haunting soundtrack speaks to me of deep secrets to be revealed and the almighty depths of space wherein I may celebrate my solitude among the stars, rather than be crushed by loneliness as many third-rate pilots have been. Secondly, as a lifelong space adventure enthusiast I am content to just fly and explore New Eden with no competitive goals or metagaming strategies. I am -for the most part- a purist gamer.
Even right now, as I cannot play EVE at the moment, I can look back on that chilly November day. Something I will always feel...An inspiring sensation I get whenever I look on pictures of nebulae and interstellar phenomena - a feeling neither remembered nor forgotten, the prophesying of our species' future inheritance.
Know that if we ever meet, that I will look you straight in the eye and tell you what I've known I always was, and always will be.
I am a Capsuleer.
