So you managed to **** off 95% of the playerbase (CCP forum alts excluded.) Made a bunch of players quit the game, couple of my friends actually.. and created a boatload of bad press and threads like this.
How many monocles and miniskirts would you have to sell to deem this acceptable?

To be fair, I think 95% is high. Almost all of the not particularly bright or intellectually curious crowd have been largely appeased. I'd guess it was more like 30% were not appeased and 1/3 of those left.
But when the players are (a big part of) the content and you alienate the best and brightest of the bunch, you're not left with much of a game.
Colossal fail is how Icelanders roll, though. Why fail small, I guess.
I'm curious about the part in that article where they talk about walking around Reykjavik being like a mosh pit (people will just walk right into you, apparently.) Is that actually true?

This could be just the tip of the iceberg with many subs waiting to expire. Who knows? It wasn't so much what CCP done, it was the way that they did it and the way that they are handling the prospect of disaster.

Edited by: LordOfDespair on 23/07/2011 06:52:06 Now I'm no marketing guru... But I think CCP would of made more money if they simply sent out a mail saying "Look, things are bad and for EvE to survive we need a little bit more money. We are raising the sub price by ONE DOLLAR!"
That is $400,000 dollars more profit per year.
Then they can fix gameplay problems (players want) Add more ships (players want) Improve gameplay graphics (players want) Improve UI (players want)
Players are the ones playing the game, What sense does it make to do things that players don't want?
I don't know how the hell Iceland works, but in the USA we have a saying : "The customer is always right" Srsly learn it.
Once the game is amazing, they can start advertising hardcore (its what WOW does and it works pretty well for them, and I started playing EvE after watching a trailer for it on youtube, it is also how I get my buddies to become interested in the game.)
Current players are happy, advertisements will bring new players in, good gameplay and quality of product will keep new gamers.
Now somebody might say "blah blah blah, you are an idiot, that is not how marketing works." EvE is not targeted at a big audience of people, it is not WOW where 9 out of 10 people will find it fun. The people who enjoy EvE, enjoy it because of its complexity and depth.Trying to make it into some MT, P2W, cash grubbing MMO will drive away the people that like that gameplay. And the type of players that ENJOY P2W and MT (little kids from personal experiance) will NOT enjoy the type of gameplay EvE offers. For me this makes NO sense whatsoever. I have no idea where CCP is going with this.
NEX, and INCARNA are just Gimmicks. The bulk of the players play for GAMEPLAY. Doesn't it make sense to IMPROVE GAMEPLAY?
(CCP hire me)

The customer is always right is not a FACT, it's not always true.
it's a philosophy of customer service that is so much bull****.
PHILOSOPHY, not fact.

95% sounds right, actually, but not of the whole playerbase but rather just general discussion trolls.
I suppose by the "best and brightest" you actually mean "people who think like I do", and those "not intellectually curious" are the ones who, for one reason or another think otherwise. To be honest, the ones in-game complaining about this stuff have yet to strike me as particularly bright, and general discussion is another can of worms entirely.
Now, if you happen to be right and the ones who think the way you think everyone should are truly the best and brightest, I'm pretty sure the whole playerbase is among the unfortunate segment that has trouble figuring out how to open their refridgerator door (refridgerator who someone else hopefully fills for them) to actually get to the food. This doesn't really sound too good, considering..
Also, the customer is not always right.

The NeX store is such a total fail. Trading MT items is fail. Everything is so stupid, rushed out and poorly communicated.
They had some weak attempt to explain the NeX pricing with a devblog, tons and tons of questions and suggestions in that thread, the marketing guy made maybe two or three quick answers on the first day after release of the blog and then vanished. Funny ... not.
If CCP would have even had some sense of sense, they would have build the MT items around a whole new branch of player industry where players were to build all the vanity items after purchasing a limited license to do so for AUR.
Also trading or market pvp doesn't make sense with these items because the supply is infinite and instantly.
Whoever designed the NeX store and the integration into EVE did an extremely poor job. But even poorer is that there were obviously no check and balances to prevent such a fail design to enter EVE.
We will see how they will do the winter expansion. If they fail this one, I predict really really rough times for CCP. |

I have started to see a number of threads where the poster cites "My EVE" and I think this hits the nail on the head. Such as the nature of the game, EVE is very personal to the individual. Hats of to CCP for taking years to foster and nurture this, and then weeks to destroy it in one fail swoop-patch.
It's Not about Monacles, Jeans or your crappy Nex Store, its about MY EVE - and that CCP, is REAL!!
PS. When I do log on and I see that hideous Incarna Screen, Thanks for reminding me that in the bottom right hand corner "Its Garbage Based"

But that's not what the vast majority of us were expressing dissatisfaction about. That's the CCP talking point for what they want to claim we were expressing dissatisfaction about. So you're either uninformed, a troll, or a CCP shill, which is it?

We're one step closer to competing with big name MMOs like WoW and a bunch of bitter vets cancelling the alt accounts that they never payed for anyway is a small price to pay. EVE is a harsh, cold universe but it'll be a little better if you buy a monocle.

While I feel indeed flattered that you assume a past or present affilition with the very organisations running Concord and various capsuleer related services, I assure that it is entirely unfounded. The likelyhood of other assumptions about the acceptance of new products will have to be seen, but considering your lack of information, I hope you will forgive me that I am very sceptic of your opinion. Especially if you state to speak for a large majority which has not yet backed up your claims.

Indeed Mr Ferguson is correct. This has nothing to do with "Art and Style" and if you think its about the cost of this "Art and Style" then I think you may wish to do some further research into why so many people are enraged. I'm sure he doesn't speak for the large majority...but at least he has a handle on the situation and most (not all) of his posts has alot of resonance and sentiment.

Point to the threadnaught where people were complaining solely or primarily about prices.
Point to the GBCW thread or post written by someone who quit solely or primarily because of vanity item prices.
You can't. Because they don't exist. What more proof do you need?
CCP and 'Alex and the *****cats (CSM)' want to pretend that this was about pricing and bad communication.
It wasn't.
What was it about?
Originally by: AkJon Ferguson For the last 8 years, EVE has been a sandbox game about Internet Spaceships and a player-driven economy with a steep learning curve and requiring a long time investment from its players/customers.
EVE has always run on low-end computers. Even by players running multiple accounts, a practice which has been encouraged in both game development and marketing by its developer, CCP games.
It has an incredible community that pays a high monthly subscription, with the average long-term player paying $50 per month or so (to support the multiple accounts I mentioned earlier.) In exchange for that high monthly subscription, EVE has traditionally offered 2 'free' expansions per year.
EVE has been and continues to be immensely profitable for its developer, CCP Games, which refers internally to EVE as its 'Golden Goose.'
Recent patches and expansions have left countless bugs, exploits, imbalances and unfinished features. EVE (Internet Spaceships) is in a state of utter neglect.
The last patch fried/overheated the video cards of a significant percentage of its customers and makes the game unplayable in multibox mode for a significantly higher percentage of its customers.
CCP Games devotes grossly inadequate financial/development resources to EVE (Internet Spaceships,) focusing instead solely on its 2 new games in development. What few resources it does devote to EVE (Internet Spaceships) are being allocated by someone who has expressed enthusiasm about breaking in-game functionality and selling it back to the players through microtransactions.
Hopefully we can agree on those facts. Now here's what winning looks like (from my perspective:)
CCP commits permanently to making Incarna optional.
CCP commits permanently to keeping $ for GTC for PLEX the only MT in the game.
CCP removes Aurum from the game.
CCP agrees that since we have paid for 2 expansions per year with our inflated monthly subscription, and since this expansion is all about Spaceship Barbies, that they will allow us to play dressup with our Spaceship Barbies for 'free' (since we've already paid for it with our inflated monthly subscription.)
CCP acknowledges that Hilmar's idea to gouge players because he saw a slideshow on the Internets about gouging players in a F2P game doesn't work in the industry's most expensive subscription-based MMO.
CCP restores adequate funding to EVE development (Internet Spaceships.)
CCP regains the respect and trust of its playerbase, and goes on to great financial success from its 2 new games, which can operate on whatever financial model Hilmar dreams up because they are new games with no established precedents/understandings.
That's what winning would look like (more or less).
What concessions did CCP make? None. The protest failed. Those of us who still have active subscriptions are just pointing that out.
