I know there are some rats that give T2 salvage, but I'm not sure which ones. Is there any list or rule of thumb about which rats are worth stopping to salvage and which aren't?

Read this.
and this is the text you are probably looking for -
"The broken components are primarily used in T1 rigs, while the perfect ones are used in T2 rig manufacturing. I have no hard data on where to consistently get the tech 2 rig components, as salvage is still fairly new, but there are some sources. Tech 2 components are more likely to be found by salvaging from tech 2 ships. They are also found from special faction rats that show up every now and then in belts and sometimes in missions. YouÆll know them when you see them because instead of a Sansha overlord, they will be titled True Sansha Overlord or something like that."
That'll be 500m ISK for use of my google search skills thank you. --

You're not going to get much if any T2 salvage from missions; only elite rats drop it and they rarely show up there. Occasionally an overseer in WC will have T2 salvage if its bounty is high enough. Same goes for the rare spawns in Blockades.
More generally: Sansha, Blood, and to a lesser extent Angels are decent for salvaging, but won't drop T2.

Thanks, but I've read that a few times before and it's quite old (2007) and was written before there was as much conclusive data. I was wondering if there was any more recent references. Or is it just Dark Blood/Domination/Dread Gurista/Sentient/Shadow Serpentis/True Sansha rats that can have T2 salvage.

That is correct. Also t2 player ships.

If you want some good loads of t2 salvage; scan down Magnet sites in low sec. I've recently been doing it just for the isk. You will want to have decent salvaging skills to access the containers. Also, google search the magnet site name to get an idea of what you are up against.
If its just wrecks you are after your best bet would be going for elite player wrecks or faction NPC wrecks.

It's still completely relevant and very little has changed except loot tables getting nerfed. That link also has many other references in it which are very useful.

exploration is the only reliable source of T2 salvage. well about as reliable as explo itself ---- Drones eat everything. Trust me. |

Thanks for all the responses. And the reason I asked is that I've been doing escalations and I knew in the back of my mind that some rats dropped T2 salvage, so I wanted to check. I started salvaging the right rats last night and I've gotten a couple pieces of T2 salvage by now (though nothing worth a ton).

Salvaging after massive fleet battles once netted me 4 billion in intact armor plates.

*jaw drops*
That's only viable for people with a large alliance in 0.0. And it's still not reliable, it requires you to be on the winning side of a large fleet battle in 0.0, lol.

There's 4 versions of NPC's from lowest to highest in any specific NPC Faction. Rat_Nomenclature (This guide lists Commander NPC's as Faction.)
I'll use Angel Faction NPC's as example:
Regular NPC = Angel (Lowest) Elite NPC = Arch Angel Commander NPC = Domination Officer NPC = Named (Highest)
T2 salvage is from Commander and Officer NPC wrecks as well as player T2 and T3 wrecks.
T1 salvage is from Regular and Elite NPC wrecks as well as player T1 wrecks.
Magnetometric Sites are the best source for getting T1 salvage and T2 salvage. Commander NPC's are the next best source for getting T2 salvage.
Commander NPC's are usually spawned in escalations gained from Cosmic Signature combat sites and sometimes spawn in Cosmic Anomaly combat sites.
I usually salvage only medium to large Regular and Elite NPC wrecks (T1 salvage) along with all sizes of Commander and Officer NPC wrecks (T2 salvage).

another source of t2 salvage is rogue drone escalations. the trial yard/moving day escalation has a great drop if you get to the end.
