I think you're missing a crucial aspect. In that you and a lot of other people don't want to spend your Aurum, you actually don't have to. From what I hear they're not going to automatically make you buy boots. If you don't want to convert PLEX don't do it.

They forced people to use CQ (temporarily stopped that, but we'll see how long that lasts). Just you wait... one day, you will try to log in and they will force you to buy a pair of boots! Ok, I don't actually think that will happen, but it would be funny in a twisted kinda way. ;)
