Hey guys. With the new Walking in stations expansion my computer is now officially incompatible with Eve as it doesn't even have Shader 3.0. I really have no idea what im doing when it comes to building computers, so I need some help from the OOPE community. I was wondering if it would be cheaper upgrading my computer from what is it now, or building a whole new one from scratch, here are my specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 640 RAM: 1.0GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 266MHz (4-4-4-12) MoBo: DIXONSXP RC4107MA-RS2H (Socket 775) GPU: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series
As im sure you can see the computer is very very old, it was made by Mesh or something. Anyway, should I just upgrade this one? Or build a new one from scratch? I have about $700 to play with. Thanks! --------------------------------------------------

you gonna need to build one from scratch.
for your budget, maybe an AMD-based system? ---

You're not looking at an upgrade, but to buy a whole new machine.
Every last bit of your machine is positively ancient from a technological standpoint... it might have been a good machine 6+ years ago, but now it's bordering on junk, since inexpensive new components give nearly one order of magnitude better performance. The CPU/Mobo/GPU have to go the way of the dodo, and 1GB of cheap DDR3@1333 (not DDR2@266) is worth only about 10$ nowadays. I doubt the PSU could be sufficient for any new build, so that one you'd almost certainly want to buy new. No idea what HDD you have, but it's probably tiny and slow. So you'll want a new one too. The only things that you could still keep would be the case and optical drive, but those are dirt-cheap anyway, and so you might as well buy new ones too (to keep the current machine as a fallback, or secondary "browse web, look at youtube" station for visitors).
Here's a few starting points...

hey akira T, we should start a PC building thread and have it stickied in out of pod. We should start a ingame chat channel for PC upgrades and new builds. Maybe develop iterations of the thread every couple of weeks and keep it updated. It would reduce the near daily PC building threads. -------------

Aside from installing the operating system do they even have a use these days? I haven't used mine in over two months, seeing as you can just get everything from the internet.

Personally, I've not had an optical drive in my machine for 1.5 years. I rarely miss it. If I do, I just rip an image of the optical disk I need to use on my laptop and run it on my desktop.

I have a fairly extensive collection of CDs and DVDs, but lately I've decided to just buy cheap external (2TB) HDDs connected via USB instead - it's actually about the same price, much faster seek times, slightly faster transfer rates, and far less hassle at the same total combined capacity. And you can find cheap 8+GB flash drives pretty easily. So yeah, generally, nowadays, an optical drive is pretty "meh". Then again, you can find a brand new DVD writer for under 20$, so, you know, why not have at least one functional optical drive in the house, write something for a friend who comes visiting without an USB stick, or whatever.

Thought about it, would probably be a good idea to have one up and running, but then again I doubt it would get stickied, and even if it would get stickied, you'd still have people making new threads about it (maybe not even in OOPE, heh). Still, worth considering, would be easier to just link people to it whenever they ask such a question. _
