I got really bored with missions so I decided to take another stab at exploration. I got lucky and finally found a radar site and netted 10 mil in loot. This got me excited so I continued on and after finding a few wormholes and ladar sites I found a mag site. For some reason I could not focus in on it any closer than 63% on the smallest scan range. I've pin pointed many wormholes and junk so I don't see how it could be a problem with my technique. Any ideas?
Also what skills can I work on to help with scanning/exploring?

Some sites can not be scanned down without the appropriate ship and/or skills. Most likely, your probes simply don't have enough scan strength to pin down the site. You can improve your scan probe's scan strength by upgrading to faction probes (Sister's scan probe launcher), train up your Astrometrics Rangefinding skill, and switching to a ship which has bonuses to scan probe strength (such as a covert ops ship, or certain T1 frigs). Or if you have lots of money, you could invest in implants which increase the effectiveness of your scan probes. ----------

Could you explain the "Sisters faction"? I don't really understand much about factions. The only one I've had experience with is Caldari Navy which I increase faction with by grinding missions. How do I gain faction with "Sisters"? Do I need to do missions with them?

It's worth noting that at short range, it is actualy better to use the regular core scanner probe than combat or deep space probes. This is because core scanner probes can be set to the shortest range. Even with equal sensor strength, the probe's range is smaller, meaning the range deviation is smaller as well, meaning that blip is actually where the map says it is and you'll have less trouble putting your probes right on top of it.
Deploying your probes in a pyramid like shape with the site right at its center tends to be the best way of getting a strong result.
The skills to improve probing are in the science tree i think. Look for skills like Astrometric pinpointing.
The most accessible ship to give a bonus to probing is the T1 precursor to the CovOps frigate, also known as the astrometrics or scout frigate. Typically it'll only require the level 3 frigate skill to fly, which you'll likely have anyway to fly the combat frigate. The Gallente frigate is the Imicus, the Minmatar one the Probe. I don't know the names for the Amarr or Caldari versions. I strongly recommend using at least that ship as probing vessel. Probing without its bonus can be a pain.

There is a number of skills that relates to probe scanning. If you want to learn more about exploration in general, I can recommend the Probing article on the evelopedia.
These are the scanning related skills:
If you want to further increase your scan strength you can also fit Gravity Capacitor Upgrade on your ship.
There is also a number of implants, special modules and specialized ships to increase this even further, but this is all mentioned in the guide I've linked.

"Sisters" faction is referring to the "Sisters of Eve", the agents for one of the major epic arc quest lines in the game. The first agent to talk to is Sister Alitura in the Arnon system.

At the end of the Exporation Career tutorial missions, the ship reward for the Caldari is the Heron, as I recall. Have an unpacked one sitting in my hangar right now.

Yes I'm using a heron fit with small gravity cap rigs. I found some sister probes on the market but no launcher. Looks like the biggest problem was I had 0 skills related to scanning so I am training them now.
Kinda curious about the deep space probes. I've never used them. I've just been using core probes and scanning the solar sys. Should I be using the deep space ones first and scanning a larger area?

You can find the sisters probe launcher on contracts. But you don't need it with decent skills, it will make things faster though but I don't recommend putting it on a t1 frigate.
For any but the largest systems, combat probes at 64 au will do the job too, don't really need deep space probes. --- Drykor - AHARM |

Thanks. BTW what are these "Gurista Hideouts" and junk? Any point in going there? Is there a way to filter these and wormholes out of my scans so I don't have to weed through all that junk?

There's no way to filter certain signatures, that would make it a bit too easy in my opinion. But you can filter anomalies from signatures by setting up your filters.
I have no idea what Gurista Hideouts are 'cause I only ever did wormhole space exploration. I'm sure there's information on them somewhere though. --- Drykor - AHARM |

It bares mentioning, that a deep space probe will allow you to eliminate certain signatures based on their size, or narrow down a certain signature you are looking to find.
Less critical in highsec, but if you expand your horizons into WH space this can eliminate 25 out of 30 signatures from being the exit you are looking for .... a major time saver
IMO, don't sink your SP there until you know you REALLY want to scan a lot. Getting all the scan skills to IV and your Caldari frig skill to IV will allow you to scan anything in HS if I remember correctly. Also? I just tricked you into reading my signature. |

Another question while we're on the topic please :). I scanned down a Mag site and warped to location. There were a few containers that said they needed salvage equipment to access them. I used my salvager I on them which allowed me to open them but they were all empty. Did I do something wrong?

No. As of late lots of sites seem to come up empty.

The "Guristas Hideout" is a combat site. On rare occasions, these lead to an "escalation", in which you are given a warp in at another system. This site may have a chance to drop faction or even dead space loot.
Some of the higher level combat sites in 0.0 also have a chance of dropping faction loot from just the ordinary site.
Also whenever a combat site has a number on it ie 2/10, 10/10, etc. This is called a numbered plex, and has overseers that drop items that auto sell for a high value and have a very high chance of dropping dead space loot.
PS: The Amarr T1 exploration ship is the Magnate and further more why do i even need a sig? |

As example of the "junk" you may be missing is the Snake Omega implant I had droped in one of these "junk" sites (regular 3/10 plex). Exactly how junkish they are you will find out on market or contract.
