I would actually buy airfix ships. So long as they are all to the same scale. Have battleships about a foot across and work up and down from there.

I would love this. I haven't built an AirFix model since I was a kid, I'd buy this complete set to build with my kids and a second set to store until the grandkids are born and old enough to build.

Not a bad idea actually, though sticking to scale will be an issue (thinking of cap ships alongside frigs). I used to love putting Airfix and Tamiya models together as a kid.
