Shortened words.
Absurd, EVE-specific idiomatic language.
People with one-word && one-syllable names.
L337 speak in random places, without regard to proper character-number/symbol mapping!!!
Random concatenations of acronyms and shortened words to create even more impossible-to-understand noveau-terms!
Stupid jargon only you and the other 9 people with a titan will ever understand.
I will not stand for this (even if I have no say and nothing I do will change anything). From now on, when you have a term you would like to use, spell it out in its entirety!!! |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet there IS a proper mapping
or are you refering to the abbreviation of the modulenames?
why should i type out things like ballistic control unit? every player 'should' know what a BCU, DC, PDU, etc. is...

I'm now defining proper mapping as including multiple values, used in legitimate l337 speak, as including roman characters and foreign phonetic characters/syllabary characters. I complained about improper mapping, anyway. *Wears his ultra-smug cap.*
Hmm... indeed, someone should know what a PDU is, but the newest player isn't going to know what a SB, BCU, PDU, DC, LSE, or SM is. The acronyms are so widely applied I don't even know if a strip miner is called an SM! ____________________________________________ [center]Due to the overwhelming number of people with "Red" in there name, I'd consider it required that everyone call me LOMPOCUS from now on![/c |

Acronyms are a useful shorthand for most people, making text-based communication quicker and easier. Yes, there's a communication barrier to new players, but it doesn't take long to pick up on the new terminology. Jargon emerges in any closed community with a technical language and, while it may be over-used, I'd say the benefits outweigh the downsides.

If you don't know it - ask! That what all "newbies" have done so far, at the one I've dealt with. And if there is an abbreviation that stands for several items, the context should made clear what's meant.
And if you're too introverted to ask a simple question, what are you doing playing a MMO (massively multiplayer online game - for you)?

The correct low slots for an active armor Myrmidon Battlecruiser are two Medium Armor Repairer II's, two Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II's, an Armor Explosive Hardener II, and Damage Control II.
Myrm lows = 2xMAR2, 2xEANM2, Exp Hard II, DCU2.
I think I like the acronym way better

I wouldn't think it was so much the EvE playerbase as it was more accurately the entire internet culture and compounded by the cellphone text message.

That is quite honestly not my problem. I'm not going to type out Ballistic Control System in a conversation about raven fitting eight times.
New players will learn the acronyms and the jargon, just like I did.

The proper usage is: "...ballistic control system (BCS)...." At which point you then use "BCS" for the remaining seven references. Don't you know Ainglish? My karma ran over my dogma. |

Some people opt to use TLA's for common phrases. For people like you, speaking properly obviously isn't even a realistic option.

I admit that my conversation frequently devolves into polysyllabic prolixity when chatting during relaxed periods, though I go easy if there are non-English speakers in the chat. However, when the crap is flying you need to be laconic... even terse. "Point!" is a lot more to the point than "I have successfully targeted Redflare's Ibis and have activated my Initiated Harmonic Warp Scrambler I and my Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I."
Every specialized area of human behavior has its own shorthand, and it's not always to keep the uninitiated in the dark. Sometimes it's because that area has basic concepts that need their own terms.
Also, umad? Cihys?
