First, about how much does it even cost to run a small or medium POS for a month?
Is this even worth it if I am only doing Invention and Copying (isk wise)? I'm sure as far as convenience goes, its well worth it. MOST of the invention and copying would just be making T2 ammo for my main. I would like to get further into Invention, but for the time being, thats most of what I would be doing. Selling some of the T2 BPC's as needed.
Also, if a character has NO faction standings, I could buy a corp with the standings to place a POS in empire and never have to worry about those standings again right? (I'd be the only one in the corp)

NOT just convenience. You also get a bonus to research speed compared to NPC slots.
As far as cost goes - it changes from day to day depending on each component of the fuel and how much you "load" it CPU and grid-wise. Very, very rough estimates, somewhere close to 110m/200m/330m per month per small/med/large (give or take 10%).
A large Caldari tower (7500tf) can host up to 15 "standard" mobile labs (500tf) which would mean 15 copy slots (*1.33 copy speed), 45 each PE and ME slots (*1.33 research speed) and 75 invention slots (*2 invention speed), but you might find a setup with, say, 10 advanced labs and 3 standard labs more appealing - 30 copy slots with *1.54 copy speed and 3 copy slots with *1.33 copy speed, 26 ME and 6 PE slots with *1.33 speed, and 35 invention slots with *2 invention speed. Basically, a large tower can support roughly 10 full-time lab users, which basically boils down to about 3 mil ISK per month per research line, or 100k ISK per day per line.
Of course, smaller scale setups are less efficient, but still decent enough for most people. _

Wow, thanks a ton Akita! Very helpful!
So basically, I'd be much better off ONLY doing the invention I need for myself while doing ME/PE research on T1 BPO's and making copies? Either way, I think I can find a good base start for any of it, considering I'd probably only start with items I use myself.

hard to give you a cost which true to all the region depend of price fuel, method of buy , number of fuel you buy .... kind of POS ( Standar/ faction/faction ) .. risk of rigor of space ( war..destruct ratio ... ) and if you And if you "pay off" the structures (time Ratio ..)
so an exemple of med pos withou pay off structure : Market: The Forge (Jita market ) Method Buy : direct without Buy order plannified Type : Caldari Pos Med Located Pos ( High sec less factor war) Charge PG/CPU high ( consumption of Fuel ( not only component) First bill : 175m ( full strontium bay) Current Bill : 166m
Eval Date end last month

Hi Daniel.
I have two options for you - I can sell you my extra corp with high standing for pos in Amarr and Caldari space
- you can join my corp, get your own hangar and unlimited slots in my POS for 10000isk per hour.
Contact me in game any time if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer, but part of the reason for this is also just for learning another aspect of Eve. As long as I can negate some of the isk with just this researcher, I'll be plenty happy. I can always make the isk running missions.

The mechanics regarding corp standings were changed a bit lately, so I'm not absolutely sure you'd keep the standings, they might revert to null standings after 7 days.
It works fine, provided the only people in the corporation have null faction standing (i.e. are essentially fresh out of school rookie toons, and NEVER run a mission). =========================

So with that all answered, I'll be setting up a small tower sometime soon to start learning on my own. In high sec, should I even worry about putting defensive batteries? I'm guessing, as long as corp standings stay with my blank alt, that in the case of a war-dec, I could just as easily tear it down and set it up after the dec.
And.. this is probably more of matter of usage, but down the road, is there any advantage to having a medium or large tower as opposed to the small (besides the obvious more research slots)?

Well a large majority of industrialist would more than likely choose caldri towers for extra cpu meaning more labs, prefering Dread Gurista large towers myself e.g 120 ehp on shields with correct hardeners and faster cycle times on EWAR makes this little beastie a real pain in the butt to take down in empire.
My own have 10 labs, 6 assemble arrays & another 6 assorted assemble arrays plus active defence.
When i first started out i used a caldri medium tower about 6 monthgs later that was ripped down and replaced with a large faction pos to service the needs of the industrialists.
Its more of a matter, do you have the potential to use your pos to its best abilitie after all when in industrie and you hit a bottle neck you create another alt to keep the flow moving
Medium & large offer better security/defence plus expansion of labs if need be.

Edited by: Paul L Atreides on 15/08/2011 11:10:34 hint : make sure you keep your bpo`s in a station in same system , not in POS ... it`s a common mistake for indy starters ^^
i have nothing else to say , Akita said everything else ^^
