Edited by: Malcolm Khross on 22/08/2011 20:17:10 Mal's First Fact: There Are Things You Can Do
Mal's Second Fact: There Are Things You Can't Do
It's simple, really. There are things you can do and things you can't do. For instance, I can make this seemingly pointless announcement to waste everyone's time. I can't force people to read it or respond to it.
I can take this opportunity to try and make a point: the two facts written above may help serve as guidelines for proper prioritizing of actions and words. If you pause a moment to reflect on the things you can do, say, influencing the people around you that know you and respect you or taking a stand for what you believe is right or governing your own words and actions; it will put into perspective the things you can't do, say, changing the opinion of everyone in the cluster or governing the words and actions of everyone else around you or forcing everyone to agree with everything you say and/or do.
I can't force everyone to use the above facts to govern the prudence of their actions or wisely choose their battles. But I can at least make a statement and hope that maybe somebody will consider it good advice.
Bright stars and clear horizons, mates.

Thank you for the words of wisdom, Captain. I will ensure that all my slaves do all they can to serve God and Empire while I care for them and enlighten them to the Truth, since that is all I can do.

I enjoy another State member to be exploring these topics. From my own extensive investigation in to perception and metaphysics I feel that my thoughts on this might be helpful to you.
Your dichotomy leaves out one very important possibility, that is things you MIGHT be able to do. Uncertainty is, in my opinion, the largest source of our uniqueness in this universe. Although in a long enough time scale, all things should be resolved from ômaybe,ö to ôdid,ö or ôdid not,ö the certainty of what our actions will cause is almost never within our grasp.
This vital component to things we can do makes your point lose some weight. Although it is worthwhile to revisit things that are NOT possible when conversing with others, overlooking the vital aspect of HOPE when conversing with others is to neglect the most fundamental components of our nature. Hope is really what you are arguing against when you ask for people to always keep in mind what they can and cannot accomplish.
I concede that normally the jibberish that spews from peopleÆs mouths does not have this intention, but when you suggest that people CANNOT change the minds of everyone, you should emphasize why that is important. For instance, you should not expect that you will change the minds of everyone and if you follow this you will be more better equipped to actually changes the minds of those resistant to your ideas (as opposed to becoming frustrated and emotional).
In any case, this topic caught my eye and compelled me to leave my thoughts here.

More or less accurate and in line with what I was saying, really. I just kept it simple so people can delve into them as they felt or not.
Truths obtained through self pursuit often hold more absolution than truths preached from another, see? ~~~~~~~~~~~
