I haven't been in WH space for a long time and the only PVE experience I've had with it is in a C5 with proper logistics and capitals. I'm with a small group atm and we have plans to do a simple WH PVE run in either C2 or C3, the plan is probably to use BCs or the like.
Thing is that the character I want to use for it is a drone specialist and has no viable turret/missile skills so I'm kinda worried about being useful there. Are droneboats viable/useful in C3 PVE runs when done in a small group? Are there ways to make it work (better)?
Also, in regards to tanking C3s in a small group; what kind of omni tank figure should I be looking at?
Any help is very much appreciated.

People are going to come in and tell you that drones are useless in wormholes.
They'll whine and rage about how drones get alpha'd the second you launch them. How sleepers aggressively target them, and nothing else.
It's all BS. I've been living in a C2 with a C3 static for 2 years. My main flies a dominix, with 1 turret fitted for getting attention. I can count the number of drones I have lost to sleepers on one hand.
Stupid people lose drones. As long as you pay attention, and pull them in when they start getting shot, you'll be fine. And if you're using sentries, it's even easier. You just tell the one that is getting attacked to return, and you don't lose all your dps.
Happy hunting.

Sleepers will target drones. How often seems to vary greatly.
I was in a C2 for awhile and the drone aggro was not horrible. The biggest issue I had in a C2 was my ship at the time (a myrmidon) just didn't have the range to effectively take on most of the sites. The first wave would be fine, but then the second wave would be a BS with 2 cruisers that spawned like 75KM away. It was just extremely difficult taking them down solo. I am sure my LVL 4 sentry mission domi could have done it easily.
I am now in a C1 (I am still a new char) and do fine in my Myrmidon. I will say that my drones get targeted much more aggressively in this C1. There seem to be some factors that change the amount.
1. Solo my drones get attached a lot. I'd say at least once every time a sleeper dies. It is borderline annoying but manageable. 2. With someone else (I have an alt that can now fly a drake) I find that my drones get targetting far less often. 3. Sleepers target my sentries almost never.
That being said, I have yet to lose a drone. But I do have to fit a remote armor and hull repper periodically and fix up the little guys.

Seconding this, rep drones are a big help. Even if you rarely use them, you'll be happy to have them, as well as anyone with you.

I've been in a class 3 for the last year or so now. Used everything from Myrmidons up to carriers. It's been my observation that sleepers switch aggro between the 2 or three most threatening vessels. If I only use one ship, they WILL kill all the drones off. If I use two or more, they'll ignore the drones (except the frigates, but I suspect that's because you've turned your guns off and are no longer a threat. I find if I just leave my guns firing at them they'll still ignore the drones, even if I can't hit them).
Also, they seem to bother sentry drones less then other kinds. But that may be because sentry drones pose no threat to the frigates.

U can use drones in C2 with no probs as soon as you will get the idea of their aggro behavior. C3 - no idea as i solo WH most of the time and its not worth it to solo C3 imo. ---- Drones eat everything. Trust me. |

Two of these kill C3s without a sweat, sentries never get targeted. Overtanks (usually only one repper is needed), uber cap stable perma running those both reppers, survives even under neuting. Bouncers for far away targets, Gardes for close range, Hobs for frigs. Rest are for PvP, one you might want to fit a scram instead of the painter. Works also with T1 reppers, but T2 cap transfer is required for stability.
Something similar might work with Ishtar, Myrm is a bit lacking in the bandwidth department to be used with sentries.

I use 10 sentries on 2 ships in a c3 and I lose maybe one drone per billion of income, maybe less. C1's seem to target drones a lot. C3's are almost no drone agro at all. . Adapt and overcome or become a monkey on an evolution poster.

Drone boats arent totally useless in WH, but they are less effective than missile boats or turret boats. If you are careful and observant, you wont really lose too many drones, but they do require a lot of micromanagement, and unless youre using sentries, you will lose a lot of DPS when youre constantly recalling and launching drones.
This mainly applies to sites with frigates though, as cruisers and especially battleships tend to leave drones alone. So in C1s or some C2 sites, which have lots of frigates, drones will get eaten alive. But on the bigger sites, you will get more opportunities to be useful.

i use drones as chaff. Normally i don't need them but if i ever get in that situation where i do, just launching them to create a distraction for maybe 30 seconds. Takes some DPS off you. I wouldn't rely on them as your main DPS though, always having to micro manage if you don't want to loose them.
