I've seen people saying in various threads that Wod will fail, stuff like "as soon as wod fails then the devs can get back to eve."
I don't know anything about White Wolf or their world of darkness thing, but I know this.. Bloodlines spread through Second Life like a pandemic. The vampire thing is a nightmare.. it's like Amway.. network marketing, but with bites and blood dolls rather than vitamins and toilet paper.
There's a segment of the population that will go gaga over this.. if ccp gets the look and gameplay right, they'll make a massive fortune off vamp gear and vampy clothes and coffins etc. etc. in their wod cash shop.
So my objective prediction is, like it or not, it will be a gigantic success..

If you can make your vampire sparkle for $20 a month, they will rake in big money.

Edited by: Alice Katsuko on 29/08/2011 19:24:25 Hopefully WoD will be a success and will become a self-sustaining game, else there's a strong possibility CCP will use revenue from EVE to prop up WoD development.
Whether or not WoD becomes a success depends on a number of different factors. While it's true that WoD might initially attract customers based on the strength of the White Wolf license and the popularity of vampires in today's mass media, keep in mind that White Wolf products are far from mainstream, and that no-one can predict whether the current vampire fad will last for another two years. Furthermore, while WoD might be able to attract customers initially through the popularity of vampires, it will not be able to keep those customers for long if WoD itself turns out to be a bad game.
In the long run, WoD's success will mostly depend on CCP's ability to create a polished product with an interesting game world and solid game mechanics -- basically, how high-quality a game WoD will be.

It will succeed if it has content, is stable and no major bugs. If CCP can pull that off they will have there very own money printing press.
If they fail on one of those things the future is bleak for WoD. Just ask Age of Conan, Warhammer, Aion, Darkfall and many other mmogs that failed to deliver the three things I listed.

The potential market is huge. If they can get it released fast enough to capitalize on all the Twilight hype...but who am I kidding, they won't get it online in time for that.
However, if they can make the game in such a way that it has enough grit and gore and sex to appeal to adults, it would also have a huge following. If they make it kid friendly, I bet it flops.

It will probably fail for the very fact that all Twilight fans will (most likely) not like it.
WoD is about politics and social unrest, and shallow people tend to avoid those subjects.

Edited by: Rinia Altir on 29/08/2011 20:25:13 When the production of WoD online was first announced, I was pretty excited. I have always enjoyed the Vampire/Hunter tabletop games. However, if it is going to be a microtransaction game, I am simply not interested. ESPECIALLY if it is subscription plus microtrans.
It succeeding or failing will all come down to implementation. White Wolf created an awesome system, game, and back story for the World of Darkness. So, that part is solid. What CCP does with it will definitely be the primary deciding factor. If its anything like WoW, it will outright fail.

I too, can see success for a Bloodlines based MMEMO game (Massively Multiplayer Emo.)
And I'm pretty sure CCP can add "hi-sec" PvE content for the Sparkly Vampire peoples, while making the "null-sec" PvP worthy of Bloodlines.
However, from what I've seen of the NeX clothing items, I worry about CCP's ability to play Dress Up Goth.

Those franchises are not even within the same league.
There is no niche for Twilight within the World of Darkness. The best things Twilight fans could do would be playing Toreador - and then leave crying when they get shot up and burned at the stake...

Twilight = Changling teens pretending to be vampires. HA, it does have a niche.

Maybe I just run in a different circle, but are really that popular? From what I can see it's got a small, diminishing niche comprised mainly of pre-teens. Am I that out of the loop that there's some big mania I'm oblivious to?

Which franchise has a bigger audience? That's what CCP is going to care about when they decide what kind of game gets released.

Vampire: The Masquerade had a huge influence on the roleplaying scene about 20 years ago. It introduced a change in game mechanics from more numerical based problem solving to character based storytelling. The whole World of Darkness franchise drew in a lot of non-geeks or at least less geeky players, elevating the whole hobby to something more, well "cultivated" or "eccentric" than just nerdy (a little tongue in cheek here, anyone who knows goths knows what I speak of...)
I am not up to date on the current scene however, especially missing knowledge of the computer affinity of the older crowd versus the roleplaying habits of the younger computer generation.

Not saying you are not right, but I think you simply cannot release a Twilight based game under the WOD label. Maybe Twilight will be a channel to get the younger crowd and the mundanes, but I guess that will be it.
Unless CCP proves me wrong, okay

Hi obsidian here,
I just want to educate the EvE community on WoD series.
First, World of darkness, aka, Vampire: The masquerade and Vampire: Requiem are as unforgiving as EvE universe. It is filled with back stabbing, horrible rage politics (kind of like 0.0) fight for resource control (humans) Any anything goes in this universe, as long as you hide the bodies.
Next, to any of you who thinks this will be filled with sparkly stuff, you are Wrong.
Here are some examples on why, based off of White Wolf's Vampire the masquerade Bloodlines, WHO are in charge of world of darkness.
(most of these should be considered slightly nsfw, due to content of blood)
All videos linked are copyright of CCP WhiteWolf and their respective developers. No vampires were harmed in the making of this however the blood of kine might have been spilled. mmm blood Everyone in game is out to kill you and out to perpetrate their psychotic will
Pisha eats people for a living
So where is the sparkle?
Anyway point being, as long as you don't mess with the story, WoD is going to be great, there will be no sparkle, and anyone who rolls a character named edward, or twilight or anything from it will meet final death in game really fast.

Edited by: Kharvor on 29/08/2011 21:27:53 Wishful thinking really.
Sony Online is pulling the strings at CCP now, thus all bets are off. My guess is that WoD will not be the game you see in the trailers, nor will it be the game that we hope it will be.
Most likely it will be a PC version of a game console release. Sony doesn't want long term subscriber commitment. They want the short term, "flavor of the month" game sales that make them oodles of money in the Playstation market. They know that casual gamers and the teenage ADHD crowd don't commit to anything for very long. Sony wants to get them on the hook, and into their wallets, as fast as they can. That means console quality game immersion, and instant gratification in the form of capes, cloaks, and pretty fangs.
Dedicated EVE players will be disappointed (again) and WoD will fail. |

Since when did sony pull the strings for a pc title? Also since when is sony pulling the strings on CCP? you need to learn that there are only 3 console networks out there if you want to put a game out on console, sony, xbox and nintendo. So.... What im saying is, you sir are an idiot and dont know what is going on. More than likely all 3 companies put up a bid for dust rights and sony won the bid for the console rights. That's it nothing more.

Given the ratio of MMO's that have succeeded to MMO's that have at best flopped, at worst crashed and burnt like the Hindenburg, WoD odds aren't looking good.
I would argue that WoW's dominance is suffocating the MMO market. But that's a whole another thread that is too late in the evening to start

WoW's universe is way too static, and nothing changes, nothing is really random. What WoW doesnt tell you is how many servers they consolidated because many people left to go to rift. Rift is kind of like wow, but with incursions at trade hubs.
