more and more features left idle for years with bugs, SISI bugs being reported for months and still making it into production, untouched factions,
Has Eve gotten to big to maintain? should they narrow their scope a little?

i'm a developer and i know: it happens when you loose control over program. Problem is: requirements changing. You develop it and you need to change some parts of code to new functions, features, requirements.... You make good solid structure for your program but suddenly client (or sales manager) come to you and say "i want XXXX" or "we want this button work opposite way!". And this XXXX can't be implemented well in your scheme. And you need to patch structure, make new workarounds.... And once you see that you can't be sure that program works the way you think it does. You make new changes but see unexpected results. Or no result at all. And once you need to drop and start from zero to develop some parts of a program.
This became worse when you have many developers who came and go.

Its not that its to big, but its what happens when you only allocate a small % of developers to work on Eve. Not only that but I've always felt that the multiple expansions a year was a bad idea. They should really limit it down to 1/yr which would give them more time to plan, develop, and test.

-more and more features left idle for years with bugs 1. I can imagine as they have introduced things they make it harder and harder to go back and revisit old bugs. With new content and relevance of how many people are actually effected by it. Than perhaps they simply don't want to put the man hours behind it.
-SISI bugs being reported for months and still making it into production 2. Pretty similar to number one. They might not know what exactly is causing the bugs so they put it live anyways to get more data so its easier to fix.
-untouched factions 3. FW or factions themselves? Either way I think this has been ignored for far to long. I love the idea of faction militia and gaining hi sec sov for your faction. I hate what I hear about this... And there are some distinct balance issues atm with ships.

This was one of the biggest issues with starwars galaxies, they produced a sound basis of code intitaially and over the years added to or changed it, the problem was that over the years the dev team shifted and changed and eventually only one or two of the original devs were left.
It got to the point where they were layering new code over old code and finding that it was effecting parts of the game that it shouldn't simply becasue the old and new code were conflicting.
Adding to the problem was that becasue they worked in seperate teams on different parts of the code, when an entire team eventually moved on and was replaced the new team didn't have a clue how any of the previous teams code worked and they had to reverse engineer it to understand how to add to it.
All this left SWG as a big jumble of spaghetti coding, this meant changing something that would in a cleanly coded game take a few minutes to adjust would take weeks of back tracking and recoding.
Many MMO's are just the same and i'm sure EVE is no different, however SWG was an extreme example of spaghetti coding.
It's surprising how many gamers ask for this and that saying "oh it would be an easy fix" but don't actually understand the issues involved, their idea may have been an easy imlpementation at release when the code was clean and new, but when they asked for it the code could be so jumbled it would take months of develeopment.

The game is not too big, but the vision definitly is. The ambition of CCP is just too large for their capability to execute it, the result has always been great concepts that come up short on delivery with a few exceptions. Generally I think they should focus on improving whats already their rather than pushing the limits of technology into unknown waters.

cant remember where but theyve blogged that they dont fix stuff like FW cause "noone is interested in it and we'd rather work on content ppl will use" -------- CCP knows better than the players whats good for their game. SOE knew what was best for SWG too. Better than all those players that left too. |
