before I waste a butte load of isk on a night hawk i was looking for opinions on its worth, and what it may be best used for.

Hi,
Obviously it has a good use for PvP where you want your fleet booster to be a good combat ship as well. It does only slightly less DPS than a Tengu with full offensive fit.
It also has one of the best shield tanks in the game.
It makes a good PvE ship too, just not quite as good as a Tengu (which is vastly more expensive anyway).
The only thin which I would see as a drawback is the training time. Getting Cruiser level 5 and Battlecruisers level 5, before you even get to train Command Ships (8x multiplier, same as Battleships), is a long haul.

If you already have the skills for it, it's definitely cheaper than a Tengu and not such a gank magnet. Also, you can put a pretty good passive tank on it for tanking Lvl5 missions.

Nighthawk is great for grinding out standings in L3s for NPC corporations, due to it's role bonus for missiles. If you have a Tengu for any reason, use the Tengu.
If you do not, Nighthawk is a most excellent alternative, although as noted above, Tengu is far more optimal in L4s mission.
And as for the PvP as noted above, with one of the best shield tanks in the game, the Nighthawk can also moonlight as its better known counterpart, the Baithawk...

Well, it's just the poor mans version of a tengu. For PvP it lacks the powergrid (and bonus) to fit MWD+Ganglink+full set of missiles, for PvE the larger sigradius, lower speed and lower DPS make it second choice only.
They recently moved the single turret from forward starboard position to the central gun mount. At least, it looks better now.

DPS difference between the NH and Tengu is minimal. What the NH loses in missile dps is makes up for with drones meaning that, unlike the Tengu, it doesn't have to waste time and ammo on annoying frigs. PVP wise both are limited but can be effective, the Tengu is a beast but only if fitted & flown well (and by that I mean exceeding the standard blob mentality).
So if you HAVE good skills to fly a NH sure go for it, but TRAINING for one? I wouldn't, it just takes too long.

The nighthawk is nice for passive tanking lvl 5's and sleepers. It is also nice to use in high risk situations where you don't want to take your tengu (like running someone else's C3 sites), but not so high risk that you are going to downgrade all the way to a drake. For most uses though a tengu is better.

I use my Nighthawk for running missions, it's a very nice ship in my opinion. A good alternative to the Tengu if you don't want to go that route, and quite a bit easier on the wallet. Not to mention seeing other Nighthawk pilots is kind've rare, I can count on one hand how many other Nighthawks I ran into, lot count of Tengu's and Raven varients though.
As I said earlier I use mine for running lv4's but also heard they are used to solo some lv5's due to it's insane tanking capabilities. As for wheither or not it's worth flying ask yourself this, did you like the Drake? If you did do you want the original drake which is far superior to it, because if you do get your Nighthawk.

NH is awesome for torpedoing myths and delusions - or was, as there are hardly any left in this regard. ---

I've used the Nighthawk in a c3 wh to solo sites. Worked well and was less costly to loose then a tengu

Yea I love the Nighthawk for that and many other reasons, it's just a real nice ship all around IMO, and for anyone with money to spare, it is sure less boring than flying a comparable Drake in its place.
Tengu may be better, but it's soooooo boring in missions, Nighthawk is fun cuz you feel like a badass everywhere you go
I got drunk one night a few weeks ago and ran around noobie systems target locking rookies at belts, they would all warp off in different directions, ... yea I know, lame right, but it was extremely amusing while drunk, just like a lot of other stuff that seems lame when you're sober, rofl

Thank You all for the feedback. I like the tengu but way to pricey for mission running. I love the drake and with the nighthawk on my main, we should be able to tear thru some lvl 4s missions.

Just make sure you fit it well. As a long time member of the NH fan club, I can assure you it will make all the difference in the world.
Hint: AB, active tank, gank out the wazoo.

I used a Nighthawk with a Golem for L4 PVE for two years in low sec and made a stack of ISK.
The Nighthawk was very good at taking down frigates while tanking the missions nicely. It was also there to attack any incoming tacklers with FoF while the far more expensive Golem got away.
That proved to be theoretical as my paranoia on the scanner meant that we were never effectively mission bust,
