Yep, the new forums need to ban anyone trying to use "rediculous" in their posts... (not ban the person, ban the "word" itself)... there needs to be a spell checker that will auto-correct it to "ridiculous" or, at the least, flag the far-too-often incorrect spelling and require the typist to correct the error. Even if someone names a character "Rediculous", they should be banned from posting at all, for they would look ridiculous.

Yeah...about that.
See, the problem isn't so much the people spelling the word incorrectly, it's that a great many English speakers not only are incapable of pronouncing the words they speak every day correctly but also went through the American Education System.
English is not only the most complicated language in the world contextually, grammatically and phonetically, it's one of few with homonyms. Really, if you want to complain about people spelling "ridiculous" as "rediculous" because people can't say "rid - ick - you - les" and instead say "ree-dic-you-less" you should also complain that the official spelling for "nay-bor" is "neighbor" and that "honor" is pronounced "on-er."

àwhich means that they've actually had some formal education on things like spelling and grammar, which is often abandoned early on for native language education.

English:
Moose - Moose Goose - Geese
Louse - Lice Mouse - Mice House - Houses
Win - won Spin - spun
To - Too - Two Won - One knight - Night (And you thought silent letters were unimportant). Toe - Tow
The fact that anyone not native to it bothers to learn English at all earns them some leeway in my book.

If you *could* care less, it must mean you care more than nothing. Unless negative caring is possible, in which case you could care less than zero. But I would think caring is an absolute value kind of thing, where even being anti-grammar is still caring.
Regardless, your grammar appears to be in order; it's only your spelling and colloquial phrases that are a bit off.

To all the posters jumping on and defending those that speak English as a second language who do not always spell things properly, the spelling problem the OP points out probably resided within individuals that use English as a primary language. I would also hypothesize that most of those guilty of spelling ridiculous as rediculous come from the States located below the Mason Dixon Line and East of the Mississippi

Well, I guess it's a type of "complicated" that's easy to learn; don't know how that would work, though.
Considering there are languages without vowels or with extremely unusual phonemes. That there are languages without articles, without grammatical genders and other interesting stuff. That some languages have noun declinations while others (romance languages) have many, many prepositions. So no, english is not difficult at all.
However, there is 1 language I can think of that is even easier to learn than english, and that is esperanto. This is a forum alt. |

I'm pretty sure its actually: "I before E except after C, when the sound is EE."
Which only leaves the following exceptions from your list: codeine, leitmotiv, prescient, seidel, seize,
Note: 1) Codeine didn't exist when that rule was invented - it seems a bit harsh to judge ill of the rule, when some scientist has just gone and made something up without consulting an English teacher. 2) I'm pretty sure prescient doesn't count, as both vowels are sounded individually. 3) Not sure how seidel is pronounced, so I gave you the benefit of the doubt.

4) Leitmotiv is actually a German word and you got the "ei" in that one right (for once), so I wouldn't count it as a contradiction in English. 3) I didn't know Seidel, but according to a dictionary it's probably also derived from German.

I want to mention that English is only my third language and so hasn't caught my attention as my native language nor my second choice.
There is also another problem that a large proportion of English is corrupted by American programs on TV making it even easier to make a common language mistake worse. English and American have actually become two different languages with a common basics in the passt.
People who like to point out mistakes in English are often enough purists in English or American, and when all is said and done I can always say that my english / american is still better than their actual knowledge of my two main languages.
CCP keeps forgetting that english / american isn't the native language for a lot of people playing EVE and that in fact there are a lot of people playing MMO's which just love to game and chat in their own languages and if need be try to do as good as possible in a language they normally don't care for.
Example: Most english spoken movies get dubbed into german in germany. Do you really think they do that because people already know enough english? Same happens in france, spain etc. There are only a few rare occassions that a countries TV stations don't keep resorting to dubbing into their own language. i.e. Netherlands
So please stop worshipping the english language as an overall language and accept it's main use is in trades and negotiations. If the language were that valuable then governments would see to it that a larger chunk of movies weren't dubbed into french, german or swahili.
Do not fear death so much but rather the inadequate life. |

I have no problem with those who speak English as a second or third language. If you already speak other languages, that's a fair enough excuse.
I have a problem with all the Americans who spek liek thizzz becuz ther ghetto or are just bad at spelling.
And to add to the easily confused words, like to, too, two, we had to learn one in school that always made me hate people.
Teach and learn. Apparently there are Americans who think that "He learned me math" is a proper sentence.

Originally by: ShahFluffers I generally let some spelling/grammar mistakes slide here and there (mostly because I'm notorious for making "typos")... so long as the writing overall is clear.
That said... the misuse of the following two words "slightly" irritates me:

Well, frankly, i get annoyed most by people who can't properly use your-you're and their-they're-there. It just makes me want to go bash their head against the wall (or any other hard surface for that instance). English is, as a matter of fact, my third language. But even i don't make such stupid mistakes...
And typos ftw, they sometimes result in funny twists on known words.
Ninja edit: also "ghetto talk" needs to be dealt with - even text like this is much more easier to read than some of the "proper english person's" writings in the likes of facebook:
