Yes, and often. Keep in mind Jita is the first likely system visited by a new player looking to pick up gear. New players are easily parted with their money. Aside from that, it's also rammed with wealthier, older market types looking to snag good deals - some scams are tailored to catch those folks specifically. |

I nearly fell for the 1mil for a faction frig scam.
Three contracts get linked, 2 are sold where the price shows 1mil. The third one is for 1bil though. But because you think the other two must have sold really fast you tend to quickly hit accept to get the last '1mil' faction frig and end up paying 1bil.
Didn't fall for it though, but thought this one was pretty clever. Better than the, send me 100mil and ill double it type of scams. |

I know someone who nearly fell for a couple of scams, one was a tengu where the sub systems where books, so always make sure it says fitted is the best way to avoid that one..
The other was a plex where it was up for a little cheaper than normal but it but contract did not only ask for the money but also has "you will give 1x plex" so i guess it works by you buying it but then it takes it right back! god knows how, i tryied it myself and it failed haha, then i gave up trying to scam.
The scams are interesting i think, the bots that spam the crap are not... |

Given the availability of the (would be) scammer's name, you can use that to check contract history. My casual browsing of scammers' contract histories suggests most get about one scam a day, give or take for activity.
You're free to look through the history of the people that accepted those contracts, too. It's almost like reading the obituaries looking for someone you know. |

I will admit to getting nailed on a margin trading scam. Not as bad as it might have been since I actually had the items requested. All it cost me was time to transport and confusion when the sale failed. I had no idea what the trading skills did at that time. And, as did many before me and since, thought it was some kind of bot or hack. The whole margin trading scam thing is a hard one to get your brain around when you are first trying to figure it out. I believe it's the only skill you can train that is only there for scamming. It has no other practical use.
Oh and I bought a 2.7 million shuttle. But that's not a scam, it's stupidity.

Guy was posting a contract for a faction item he was selling at 1.5 billion the other day. On the market was a buy order for that same item at 2 billion, which was 1.5 billion more then the next highest buy order in Jita. The buy order was listed for four of them, and had the minimum volume set to 4.
I'm sure that the same guy that with the contract is the same guy with the buy order. I pointed it out in passing in Jita, it was just way to smart not to say anything. I'm pretty sure someone fell for it.
I think that's the most impressive scam I've seen in Jita. |

Simplest way to avoid the market scam is to put lowest price first, so all the high prices are down at the bottom of the list. Anyway.
Once when i won a ship on the lottery, i recieved a contract minutes after claiming the prize. This is the usual way to recieve prizes from the lottery.
Catch was the player had seen me win on the lottery site and issued his own contract to me before they did, his contract was for a billion isk instead of for free. I'm so used to just quick accepting these prize contracts i honestly almost fell for it. Player issuing the contract was even called LOTTERY PRIZE FUND or something similar.

I did once a long time ago, aside from the not so scammy Margin Trading games. Those are more like long, elaborate cons; truly they are more effective the longer someone spends on them.
The ones I fell for were relatively invested, with long histories and in one case, actual T2 Rigs that you might expect to be profitable. Actually both had T2 Rigs, but one had something I was somewhat convinced might be a Collectible, which was the marketed item, in addition to the rigs.
I actually figured if the marketed item didn't fly, the rigs would cover the majority of my losses. I'd calculated, between the 2 Contracts, I stood to make nearly 1.4 Billion profit off the rigs alone. I was wrong. Someone had stitched the price history together going back a month or more, then lumped all the T2 Rigs, (small, and mostly drone rigs which was the issue), into 2 contracts on different characters.
Might have been two players, but I doubt it. The first contract was actually fairly legit and only involved some market manipulation rather than a Margin trade ploy. The third I'd almost forgotten about, was one I found just after I fell for the first 2, (I was having a good night), and with that one I figured I'd see if I could set it up to beat them at their own game. I actually arranged everything so I could click through as fast as possible.

It was after that I learned about the Margin Trading skill, and how it really worked. Sadly, I dumped ~ 2 Billion on the Drones, 1.4 Billion on the 2nd Contract, and another 1.8 Billion or so on the third. I don't recall what the third had in it, but I was rather angry at that point so it didn't matter.
Turns out you can't beat a game mechanic. If they'd actually been players, I'd have had them if they'd been sitting at the same table running the scam. Literally, less than 1 second between Contract accept and sell. Yes, I was that fast.
Aside from that, I think I bungled a few Buys and sells, getting items for too much, or selling them for too little before the 5 minute time lapse to change order was over, (scammed myself), and might have even accepted a phony Contract once for not too much loss. I think I even got something out of it, it's just that it wasn't worth what I paid.
That's EVE for you. Maybe I was actually sleeping in front of my computer and dreamed I posted. Certainly, it's not there now. |

What's the worst scam you have fallen for? Own up here!!!
I bet new players and when people first started scamming in Jita yes. Now, only new players.
using "new players" as a euphemism for "idiots" isn't being honest now is it please leave |

I actually got a personalised scam - a private contract of a Crusader to me for 11bil. Presumably hoping I'd accept it thinking it was 11mil. So I made my eveboard isk private after that |

Best tip of the day for anyone wanting to avoid a scam in Jita.
Do not read/click anything in local!
Except if it is something sent by me .. in which case you know you can trust it and should accept straight away. ISD Praetoxx Ensign Community Communication Liasons (CCLs) Interstellar Service Department |

I had a greedy moment once, was selling a ship and wanted the isk in a hurry, did a direct trade, guy was clever, he checked to see how long it would take me to click OK to trade then cancelled it , then said he'd cocked up and set up the trade again, then little predictable me took the same amount of time to check everything and just as I clicked OK (you know when your at that pint of no return) he changed the price to 1 isk. Doh..........
Was a face palm moment, but hey should have listened to the never direct trade unless you know someone ...... so my fault really.

Never been scammed nope. I did get an APOC for a real good price once on a contract in Jita local... But one thing I've found in addition to being careful, for the most part, don't have more than 50 Million in your wallet when in Jita. But of course everyone knows (or should know) PAY ATTENTION... |

Not Jita scam but I once paid 880 mil for a shuttle. Been avoiding this one for years, but one night too many beers, needed shuttle quick and there you go. |

I think the biggest scam of all is how they get people to buy more than one account "just to survive".
The worst part is, the victims of this scam perpetuate it by saying "well, in order to survive in this game, you need a scout alt, an indy alt, a tackle alt, a PVP alt, a high sec mission/incursion alt to pay for the PVP alt...blah blah blah".
One of the reasons why this game is not hitting big time in subs, yet remains top of the genre is due to this scam, because most people see it as such. |

Scams do work, if it didn't people wouldn't bother in the first place.
I personally find it is boring to do and having to spam post contracts constantly is rather tedious.
I'm certain many people have fallen for a scam before, may not be in this game or recently, but I'm sure that many have fallen for a scam.
I fell for a scam back when i was in middle school playing Runescape. I gave my best sword to a high lvl player on the promises that he'll allow me into his clan, he logged off and blocked me.
I did however report it. He got banned and I got my sword back. |

I once won 1 of every navy faction frigate from Jita local...it pays to watch the feed, sometimes people give stuff away for trivia etc.
I myself occasionally give away stacks of t2 ammo for correctly answering classic cartoon trivia!
That said...you should probably ignore Jita local chat anyways. ____________________________ I am a carebear, and I support High Sec ganking and PvP. Just please, don't blow up my Hulk*. <3
