Can anyone describe the best method for getting my feet wet by hunting NPC pirates/drones? I am a newb currently running missions at level 2 but would like to try lots of stuff. How do I find them? Thanks in advance for any help.

Any roid belt in 0.8 or less will have rats at some point. The best thing to do is get a good L3 frig for your race and go hunting. Don't start below 0.7 at first. Get comfortable with the rats in each security level, then move down to the next lowest. Repeat.
The jump from 0.1 to 0.0 can be quite steep though.

I am a newbie myself, so hopefully you will get advise from a more experienced player.
But to start head to the asteroids belts. In areas with sec level above 0.5 that's one of the spots they hide in.

well if u want to npc bounty hunt go to 0.8 system astroid belts and look for npc rats to kill
however it will be more profitable for u to continue running missions until u can get into a cruiser at least then head out to <.5 sec space and hunts rats there

If your already on lvl2 missions then you could try some Deadspace Complexes, they should give you some decent rewards. Other than missions and Deadspace Complexes, the only place to find decent NPCs to kill is in 0.4 and under. Obviously you have to becareful, and i wouldn't recommend it until you feel confident enough to PvP, as you will eventually run into some nasty players who will try to engage you in combat.

Thanks for all of the advice. I will definately continue the missions but wanted to add a little flavor during the process. By the way, EVE is my first foray into MMOG-ing and this constitutes the first post I've ever placed. Must say, the folks in EVE are a pretty friendly lot. Thanks again.

Start with long range engagements..
I made the mistake of using a blastrax (up close pvp setup) when i was a noob and got hammered. switched to rails and i was fine.
As you get more confident of coping with spawns in the sec system your in, let them get within drone range (depends on drone skills).

Zunami, thanks for the link to that thread/article! It will help to work my way through the complex choices of weaponry and combinations. (already lost a ship while experimenting...ouch). Much appreciated!
