How long do accounts exist if you cancel them? If at all possible I'd like to get back into my old character but it seems that my account doesn't exist anymore =(

I looked this up recently too because I was about to reactivate my account. Your character data and equipment are preserved on their server for six months from the day you canceled the account.

I think they last even longer, as i looked up my old CEO the other day to see if he was still in the system, or whether he gone forever in one of the DB cleanups... well he is still there and he quit +18months ago

Anything else would get the guy who made the decision fired.
It makes no sense not to keep an accounts data. It costs pennies and could be potentially worth hundreds if the customer wanted to return. The customer clearly wouldn't come back if his players were deleted.
In the past most companies have stated a certain time period but ive never even heard one story of someones account not being there when they returned to a game. I guess the time frame stated by the company is for liability or something, I dunno.
I could be wrong, but like I said, it makes absolutely NO sense from a business point of view not to keep a players account info indefinitely. Data storage is just too ridiculously cheap not too. Example, I can buy a 120 gigabyte hard drive for 50 bucks U.S. Even if every players account took 50 megabytes (which is just a crazy exageration im sure) thats 2400 people. If 2400 people came back to play for only one month thats 36,000 dollars U.S. So in my example if only 4 of those 2400 came back for one month the investment in the storage would pay for itself.

The timer is 6 months... as for preserving them indefinatly you'd be insane to... You may be able to get the hardware cheap but the problem is running it... The reason they have the 6 month period is so that all the accounts that are created on temp/into time promos and then never really activated don't clutter up the server as even if you can keep the inactive data the system still has to search through it everytime it looks for a spcific char (say doing a "show info" on someone).
You also have to take into account the cost of power for the extra servers and the maintainence. Its cheaper to keep the DB small as possible by removing unused accounts that it is to run a DB server with only inactive data for eternity. Remember CCP may be able to afford it however like 99.9% of all companies in the world if you can save a 1$ by deleting useless data then they will do it, anything to increase revenue. Yes it hurts when a customer wants to come back but thats why they tell you up front (or at least when you deactivate) that it will only be stored for 6 months. If they player comes back after 6 months anyway (or after his account has been deleted) he is usually considered a new member anyway so it doesn't matter.
I personally renew all my MMOG accounts that i may later return to at least once every 6 months for a 1 month period to save data and to see what changes they have made... And like this months renewal of EVE got myself hooked back on it again ...
Oh well enough ramblings from me... and yes I do manage my own servers and I know data isn't much more than pennies to keep it stored but its pennies I could be charging someone else to let them use the space :)

I think they guarantee 6 months, but AFAIK they haven't actually deleted any yet.

I don't know about EVE, but it really costs a few eurocents to keep the data. The problem is some companies don't believe in costumer care (i'm not saying ccp). An example? Final Fantasy XI. After 3 months you cancel your account, your data is deleted and to reactivate your account you have to buy the box again! (50 bucks).. brutal..

I disagree Exavier. Its cheap. Real cheap, even when you factor in power, hardware and everything else.
And with the current generation of databases, having data that never gets accessed doesn't slow things down. At least on the scale we're talking about.

As many already have posted, characters are guaranteed to be stored for six months. However, since storing characters take up such a small part they are stored forever. If this changes it will be announced.
