Anyone else getting pc reboots when you're fired on, or fire upon something?
I can repeat it every time.

Same for a member of my corp, seems for him its 250mm cannons, other weapons seem to work ok. Was hoping to find some info here for him, still at least i can tell him he is not alone. ** Eve...The final frontier....To boldly explode, where no one's exploded before ** |

Yup, i am the above person Nova is talking about. All of my weapons work fine except 250mm cannons, their not active/active light does not show up when i equip them and when i fire them the game crashes immediately or after 1-2 rounds, this proceeds to restart my computer and list a device failure. I reinstalled my drivers (3.5 catalyst) and i am using a P4 3.16 ghz, MAYA GIGABYTE RADEON 9000 PRO (128 mb), Windows XP, and 512 mb ram. I already sent in a bug report as well.

For me its the drones, any drone any where around up to about 50Km starts shooting and my pc reboots. I think its the sound other people with the same video are not having a problem. I have intergrated AC97 audio.
I am going to go and get an audio card and try that. In the morning.

I got the same problem and I distinguished it to the sound. They changed the sound to a real artillery boum and not a machine gun anymore, and everytime someone or me fires that kind of boum it makes boum here at home :)
Glad I am not alone and to bad for us.
I use as well an AC97 inboard soundcard and new drivers?????? well....
Guns that doesn't work are: 250mm, 280mm, Carbine 280mm others I don't have, now I have to go hunting with beams and a 200mm - just hope that I won't encounter NPC who are using the above cannon.
Can we manually change the sound file for that, or can we turn off completly the sound? Turning down the sound doesn't work.
As well I get under the splash screen an error, which I have to click i.o. EVE will start: Title Bar: "Digidesign DSI", Text: "Could not load at proper address" Maybe there is a conection???
Maybe someone got a new driver for the AC97 card???? Help is much apreciated.
Cheers M8s, hang in there

I also have the Avance AC97 Audio card. My 280mm howitzer works fine, I just found out that i crash as well from drones fighting near me. As posted above the problem seems to be with the sound card/drivers.

Well, I confirmed that if you turn off the audio in prefs.ini file by setting audio=0 everything works just fine.
This morning I found a solution, you go to local computer store, plunk down $49(us) get a SBLive card and my problem went away.
I tried all sorts of drivers, I don't recommend you waste your time, as none had any effect at all. There is something wrong in the audio code maybe a divide by Zero, I think, as the AC97 is embeded in a motherboard critical componet, when it crashes it takes your system down.
My system is a Compaq Presario 6000, I not saying this how you should have to fix your problems. But I did wanted to share that this did fix it for me, if you want to go that route. I see it did not fix it for Hue Jorgon so no garuantees.
So I am moving on to the next problem, how to get my lab slots back.
Good luck all.

A new hint from the MS-Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311152
"SYMPTOMS When you run the Microsoft DirectX Diagnostic tool (Dxdiag.exe) sound test on a computer that has a VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (Windows Driver Model), the test may not run properly, and you may receive the following informational message:
Your Sound Card does not support hardware buffering. Sound will only playback from software buffers. CAUSE The VIA AC'97 Audio Controller driver does not support a 22050 audio sampling rate, which is required for the Dxdiag.exe sound test. STATUS This behavior is by design. "
Well maybe they sampled certain sounds with 22050?
Devs are u listening?
For the hint from Gantell - havn't tried that out, but thanks for the info about the pref.ini
Cheers

Just to let you know, I'm having no problems with AC'97. The driver I am using was downloaded from the website of my motherboard manufacturer, so if you have a MSI motherboard, take a look here: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_list.php?part=1&kind=3&CHIP=3&ID=1

Same deal here...
As gantell pointed out to me it was likely my soundcard.
Everytime i fired my 250mm scout or my 720mm howy the game when poof. I also had this sometimes when a person spawned and the poof sounds was generated...all in all my soundcard seems to have problems with poofsounds...
Im gonna try shutting down the sounds before i get a new card though and when that helps il get myself an offboard model..maybe il get another SB live =p.
I'm gonna see if i can get more info on how the AC97 chip is embeded. I personally have an ASUS A7V333 mobo...
The latest patch seems to have new sounds to the weapons i think this is the reason why crashes didnt happen prior to patching.
Thx a bunch for everyone that helped me figure this out!!

Originally by: cashman It's time for Eris to get a clue. CCP should make a statement about this.
It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

I have the same problem.
Been tresting it since the patch. It is sound related and have traced it to projectile weps. I have been tring diffrent weapon types and the lasers seem to have no affect nor do the small blasters.
Anything larger than a 150MM autocannon drops the game faster than a dress on prom night.
I have not had this problem with any other game or until the new sounds with this path.

Can confirm that
AC`97 soundcard, ASUS A7V333X mobo Game crashes 100% within 10 seconds of someone firing a 250mm light artillery proto, or on similar sounds.
It also takes windows with it, so most probably u'll only see your machine rebooting. (I managed to get a BSOD telling me, there was a hardware failure blah-blah, and reboot - the usual xp sh*t)
Will try the soundcard drivers, to see how they fix the issue.

Well I installed this driver and Windows liked it. It loaded everything connected with it, like perfect, volume, record player everything, not sign in the device browser, but the sound is not coming out :( and the game works now - without sound. Any1 got any idea? Normally when u install a driver and there is a fault, windows tells you.

Hi Guys
We are looking into this, problem is this seems to happen only with these intergrated sound cards and then usually if you have old drivers. Drivers for these sound cards are generally found on the computer manufacturer site or the motherboard manufacturer site.
We're trying to reproduce this here so any information about your computer would be of help. We know it's the AC97 card but anything to narrow it down more would be great.

I also have the ac97 onboard sound, and same thing with the drones, soon as a drone fires upon a pirate, my pc resets itself.
well! on the bright side it looks like its being resolved! woohoo!
I have a gigabyte ga-7va card, it happened in beta a lot, then when the game got launched ive never had this since the patch before last.

Sound cards and their drivers are a common problem. One workaround that seems to work for pretty much any sound-related problem is to go to your sound properties and turn the "hardware acceleration" slider down to minimum. This makes the Windows/DirectX system do everything in software and treats the sound card as just a really dumb loudspeaker. Which is almost guaranteed to work, even if it's possibly a bit slower than ideal.
This slider is in various places on different OSes - you may need to hunt around for it. On WinXP its at: Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Voice(tab)/Advanced/Performance(tab). It's in a similar sort of place on Win2k and Win9x, but I forget exactly where.
You will also lose a lot of the fancy 3D sound effects - basic stereo only. But that's better than crashing.

Ive had this problem sense I brought the game home It wasn't just combat I used to be only able to play for like 20 min before a reboot. Thought it was a video card worked with customer support to get it fixed. Updated video card, mother board and sound drivers. I also have an onboard soundcard but its a nividia nForce. After re-installed the sound driver it did work for like 2 hours then rebooted again so I gave up and just keep sound off in prefs.

Thx Mistaph leBaal. (Merci beaucoup) I think you got it right.
It works, I lost the sound of the projectiles fo 250mm and 280mm, but it doesn't crash anymore and I still have the "normal" standard sounds. I tested it in all postion and I have now the positon of the slider to standard acceleration to use only standard DirectSound acceleration features.
So I can play at least with sound. Cheers for that workaround.

So just how do you find the updated driver?
I have a Gigabyte K7 Triton 400, and have spent the last hour searching the net. I have found endless sound drivers supposedly for the on board advanced ac97 - indeed on the gigabyte site there are about 12 or more, ranging from 3.6MB -16MB, from 4 or 5 different developers, none being the one that came with the mb disc!
How do I choose, and does it matter what the make of driver I use?

Happened to me 3 times yesterday and only since the last patch. I have C-Media sound which also happens to be built in to the motherboard.
I set audio to 0 and all is well except no sounds ofc which is a shame.
But at least I can come back to a ship with more than 15% shields left.
It is a CM8738/C3DX
XP says it has the most up to date drivers.
Hope this helps.

I didn't realise that this was a known probelm as it's only happened to me a couple of times... however, the last time I was fighting in my moa and when I managed to get back online (it took forever to login :@) my moa had been destroyed!!!
I'm still waiting for a reply to my petition... as surley it's not fair if I lose a ship because of the game crashing with what turns out to be a known problem!
I too had a 250mm canon installed on my ship (come to think of it my client only seems to crash when I'm using it!) and I have an integrated AC97 soundcard on my motherboard, tho it is (or at least should be) disabled via BIOS... I use a soundblaster Audigy card normally!

Hmmm... I got an ASUS motherboard with onboard sound, which is turned off. My soundcard is a Trust 514DX 5.1 Sound Expert Optical, top of the line according to Trust.
I still have the crashes, but after closer examination, is seems that the drivers downloaded from the Trust website is a set of C-Media drivers.
I guess this is more a problem between Eve and C-Media drivers than onboard sound vs. soundcards (most onboard sound are C-Media driven, so I guess that's why the fault seems like a C-Media one). Gonna try the Realtek drivers now, hopefully they work (the Trust ones doesn't).

Just a bump for my post above - it works pretty reliably and you don't have to go hunting for (IMHO mythical) stable drivers for obscure chipsets. This is true for other games as well as EVE - it's not something wierd that CCP have done. In my technical opinion based on many years of experience writing games on the PC: soundcard drivers are teh suk. :-(
