Going to train an alt for the best cruiser-level DPS ship for PVE, i come to Vigilant cruiser that can easily do more than 700 DPS ith good but not super-skills.
I'm wondering if there is another cruiser close to that that is a bit cheaper.

Blaster dps? Diemost is also 700 dps for around 100 mil.
For dps that's a bit more real, maybe Ishtar for 600s. |

The highest DPS numbers aren't what you want. Its a bullshit metric. What happens if the rats kite your vigilant at 60km and you have to mwd over to a new one each time? A tengu would have done better even though its paper DPS is less.
What are you actually doing? EFT warrior is not interesting. How to do lvl 4s best is interesting. How to do WH content is interesting. How to best run sanctums is interesting.
However if the question is only 'How do I get DPS on rats in a cruiser size boat for cheap(er than vigilant)?' The answer is the Ishtar/Gila. Launch sentries -> orbit sentries. If its an alt then you assist drones to the main. |

cruisers for pve :
Tengu 715 dps at 110 km - best choice ishtar = 450drone dps gila = 450 drone dps legion - 4-600 depending on range cerberus 450-500 at 100km targeting range and I suppose navy caracal? 450 with scourge furies at 71km targeting |

That should be 538. And the range should be something like 42+12 at that damage, considerably higher if you drop down to the 450 damage range. |

sentry drone rigs will give you the extra 45-88 dps sure, but usually most people prefer to tank their ishtars - it's only a cruiser after all.
And yes one might say that in a ship with a miniature signature like the ishtar the speed is it's tank, but sometimes in pve situations you land up in the middle of 4 tackling frigates where you can't leave and can't kill them fast enough and then you need that extra tank endurance.
OTOH if we were talking domi I'd say : go ahead and slap 2 sentry rigs on it , it can use it. |

The Zealot is pretty nice for it, providing 500+ at 45km and a bit over 700 DPS at 15km optimal.

538DPS with 2 sentry damage rigs without guns firing. 448DPS tank vs Serpentes while moving 558 m/s. Cap stable when the guns aren't firing.
I fly a Gila with about 500DPS passive tank with an AB. This is more than enough passive tank is enough for any L4. Furthermore since a Passive Tank only gets its maximum regen at around 30% shield, and I rarely go below 50% shield, I can safely speculate that 448DPS tank will be more than adequate for L4s.
By the way, if you turn on the unbonused guns the potential DPS goes up to 606 DPS. More if you use Multifrequency, but the range there is very low.
The unreasonable part about this ship? It requires all CPU bonus skills to be at level V, including Drone Rigging, in order to fit everything. Still, with some minor adjustments, such as swapping out some T2 modules for high meta modules, I bet you could fit it on someone with lesser skills.
If you're truly worried about frigates, then you could potentially swap out the afterburner for a stasis webifier I. You'll lose your speed, but frigates won't stand a chance once you web them.
Just because you do damage with your sentries doesn't mean you won't have enough tank. . |

Actually I've never been worried about serpentis or guristas - ishtar after all has extremely high natural resists in thermal and kinetic areas. I was worried about the angels and mercs, who require omnitanking.
Ishtar, like any other gallente ship, has holes in it's em and explosive resists - the hole in the EM comes not from actual resists penalty but from having too few low slots.
BTW swapping the afterburner for a web - real bad idea- ishtar mainly speed tanks, and besides webbing a tackling frigate will not make it "insta kill" , drones have no problem catching up to the frigate, after all once it's in range it turns off it's mwd and starts to orbit really slow - they have problems hitting the thing because of it's small signature, and killing it because of it's high repair rate.
Eh - tbh using a cruiser for pve , other than the tengu, is a really bad idea, so the ishtar for pve discussion is kinda pointless. There's a ton of BS's out there that can have 1000 + dps, unless you're hoping the belts or flying in hostile low/null sec space where the cruiser agility really helps I see no reason to fly 1. Tengu is unique in a sense that it can deliver 750 dps to 110 km and not many ships can do that - as someone pointed out - kill the triggers from 100 km and leave - mission complete. |
