My character is a Caldari but I fly a gallente ship, I was just wondering if their are any disadvantages from me flying a different races ship?

Nope as long as you train up the gallante ship skills you are not disadvantaged in any way and I'm reasonably sure that you never will be.

I'd be all for race benefits, so long as they werent totally overpowered.
Make it a tiny incentive to use your races ships... but not so that your totally gimped for not doing so.
Like:
Gallente: +1 drone controlled if flying Gallente ships
Caldari: +5% missille velocity when flying Caldari ships
Minmatar: +5% ship velocity when flying Minmatar ships
Amarr: ability to transport Slaves without sec decreases when in Amarr ships

Well sorta...
Nothing that would hurt your preformance directly in a gallente ship.
But your attributes are diffrent for each race. Caldari can have extremely high perception and willpower. This helps you max those missile, ship, and gunnery skills. But it also means that you have something like 6 memory. so training drone skills to the max to take advantage of gallente drone bays and bonuses will take you two to three times as long.
Same goes for a gallente piolt trying to max his torp and crusie skills to take full advantage of a raven.
(note this only applies to one of the races within each race)

Agreed though - it would be fun to have small incentives - but like you said, nothing that would gimp you from flying anything else.
Stuff toward sensor strength, scan resolution - and other thing might be good (that way you might give the same bonus to all race - i.e. they understand Ladar better since they minmatar... etc...)
