I would like the ship scan probes to be able to find ships, even if the pilot logs off.
The dissapearance of ships when people log off, is annoying, but probably nessesary due to the instability of the internet connection. But the ship should not be safe, it should still be in system and it should be possible to find it. The delay of the scanner time, would be long enough for the pilot to restore connection and be able to resume fighting if he so wishes. If allowance has to be made to the instability of connections: Let pods dissappear, not ships. Pods could be too small for the scanner to find them. Would solve the inconsistency, that you can find an empty ship, but not a piloted one.
I have seen now that some people are employing terrorist tactics, entering territory wrecking havoc by killing haulers and shuttles. The moment resistance grows too tough, they log. Some hours or a day later, they come back, and continue. Being able to find their ships would prevent this tactic. Not much fighting is done in pods.
I have seen too many times how an entire fleet of ships, loose connection at the same time. At this time I want to be able to call in a scanner and find them.

Just thought i'd say that I like this idea.
However if your connection drops doesn't your ship warp back to the nearest station? If it does then that would need to be changed too.

Something like warp residue. Follow their trails and wait for them to re-materialize.

If your connection drops, after some seconds (one minute?) you warp 1'000'000 KM in a (random?) direction. After you log back in, your ship either warps back to the mission nav you were or a station/gate. Mostly you can't interrupt that warp, because it's started before the interface is loaded. -----

ah that explains why it always seemed to warp me back to a station then. Very annoying when in a locked deadspace complex and your connection drops.

Edited by: Unleashed on 16/03/2005 22:51:16 Edited by: Unleashed on 16/03/2005 22:50:14 what about if you log off in space, still warp to a random ss, ship still disappears, but your pod is ejected(say its an emergency evac situation) to say 30/40(50?) km away from your ship(both pod & ship disappear). When you log on, you appear xDistance from ship making time for defenders to get probe scanners out and look for your ship before you can get to it in time. once you are able to climb back in, it would also have all mods turned off etc, or at least high slot mods turned off.
this way it wouldnt be a big deal for someone who crashed during npcing etc, but if in hostile territory it really would hamper the ability to simply logoff/back on at will. ___

If you proposed that i belive you have a great ISP and also no other things to do.
Imagine that my phone rings and i am called to work... what to do i was in 0.0sec and the closest station is 10 jumps away.
What to do: 1. Log off in middle of battle and be SURE that your only ship is gone because the damn work. 2. Try to make few jumps without getting traced, and live with the feeling that there is a big chance to lose your ship, again because of the damn work. 3. Give up work.

This may be a stupis question but how possible would it be to halt the game for a fraction of a second at the quit command in order for the client to send an "I am logging off" message to the server? That way they could make your ship stay if you just logged of but in the case of a connection drop-off (with no log off message) your ship could warp to safety. Of course you would always have the dedicated pathetic type would would just have their finger on the modem switch but it would at least cut back on some of the log off tactics. .+ (_) Fetch the holy hand grenade |
