Just one quick question... I have done a fair amount of training recently and have noticed various secondary skills. For example when i was training for my covetor i needed astrology, science, industry etc... In the primary skills section it might say i need astrology 4 but then in the secondary skills section it would say i needed astrology 5. Which is it? I have done this ages ago but why does it do that?
I can only assume that primary are the minimum requirements and secondary the recomended. E.g. Astrology 4 is ok and would just about let me use the covetor but with astrology 5 i would be using it at optimum rates.
Anyone have any thoughts on this???

You need to have all the primary, secondary and tertiary skills to use the equipment or learn the new skill.

The easy way of knowing if you can or cannot use something is check the skill reqs, and if it is ALL green then you can. If there is even one red you cant.

Yah secondary skills seem to be... required in all cases. I guess just think of primary as the skills you need to use that class of... uh whatever, and secondary the specializations you need for the specific, uh... thing.

I dont know why they have secondary skills etc.
Unless of course the primary need to be trained before u can train the secondary (because of the secondary skills skill reqs.)
Or the other way round (secondary needed for primary?)
If not then i dont see why they have secondary skills etc in the skill description/requirements.

If you have a high lvl for a secondary skill -it speeds up your training time
....as far as i know

The top level of each skill the tree is what matters. An example of the Retriever Mining Barge will hoefully make this clear.
Primary:
Mining Barge 3
Secondary:
Astrogeology 4
-----------
In order to train the mining barge skill at all, you need to have astrogeology 3. That is why it appears under the primary skill tree.
However, in order to fly the retriever you need another skill, astrgeology, at 4.
So, astrogeology is required at 3 to train mining barge, and at 4 to fly the retriever.

Its really a formatting confusion. Pay attention to the tabs. Here's an example.
125mm Railgun II skill requirements
Primary:
Small Hybrid Turret IV
---Gunnery I
The tabbed "Gunnery I" Indicates that Gunnery I is a pre-req for Small Hybrid Turret
Secondary:
Gunnery I
The turret mounting requires gunnery I. Why they duplicate this is beyond me.
Tertiary:
Small Railgun Specialization I
---Sharpshooter III
------Gunnery II
---Small Hybrid Turret V
------Gunnery I
More tabs. "Sharpshooter III" and "Small Hybrid Turret V" are tabbed in once, indicating that Small Railgun Specialization I requires Small Hybrid Turret V and Sharpshooter III. Gunnery II is tabbed in twice, under Sharpshooter III, indicating that Gunnery II is a prerequisite for Sharpshooter.
Technically, mounting the railgun only requires Small Hybrid IV, Gunnery I, and Small Railgun Specialization I. However, Small Railgun Specialization has a high pre-req, so you wont be able to get Railgun Spec without Hybrid 5.
