The Problem: CCP promised us much for Exodus, and was unable to deliver. CCP is now stuck fixing bugs, and unable to fix the gameplay.
What happened?
Player imagination and ingeinuity outstripped CCP's ability to develop.
The Solution: Throw more programmer power at the problem.
CCP probably doesn't want to hire more programmers. They probably aren't ABLE to hire more programmers. How can we, the players, save our game before it truly is too late?
Enter the Freelancer. Create a new ISD division, FCL(Freelance Coders for Life ), and recruit player programmers in to help relieve the bug fixing and feature programming workload from CCP's in-house team, allowing them more freedom to FIX The Problem.
I am a freelancer, I'm also a amateur game developer. I've written many modules that duplicate many of EVE's functions, just without bugs. A key example is my item management code, which includes class methods for sorting and storing player preferred sort methods.
The legal implications can be blanket fixed by simply wording the NDA and contract correctly. I have a couple already made up for my own uses, they are not hard to make.
I'm willing to give freely to EVE and CCP 2-4 hrs a day of my time to help fix this great game.
I'm certain there are others willing to do the same.
WHERE ARE YOU?! Stand up and be counted...show CCP you want to help!
(Please remember the EVE client is mainly written in stackless Python, If you already know Python, and want to learn more about the Stackless variant, go here: Stackless Python. I do not know if the server is written in the same language, but it would make logical sense. The only other language that I know for certain would apply, is SQL, the standard Database query language.)

You must be out of your mind if you think that CCP will let a volunteer touch their code
Tbh I think issues that people are most concerned about are not solved by programming work. What people whine about most these days is that there is nothing really happening, there's not really incentive to go to 0.0 and so on. __________ Capacitor research |

No, not out of my mind. I've seen other developers doing this. The main issues are: Ensuring a volunteer doesn't sneak in hax to give them bagillions of isk, and to ensure that no one volunteer can recreate EVE from the source he gets assigned to work on.
First issue, is easily solved by ensuring that the contract gives CCP the right to quite legally sue or persue litigation of the volunteer if such an attempt is made.
The second, is handled by the object oriented nature of Python itself. "Here is the class for instantiation of a player-made item. When it works right, it should do...blehblehbleh. Fix it.".

That's unacceptable option for security reasons. Also, as they are making money from this product, they can't, or at least shouldn't, use slave labor. Sweat shop programmers. pfft
best they could do is outline exact problem on forums and ask the community offer solutions. But no individual assignments of tasks

I'm gonna have to hear some examples of other developers doing this. Not that I think you are a lying bastard just that I find it so increadably unbelievable that this is being done anywhere.
Edit: Fyi if you want to do some game programming and don't mind donating your time then you might want to contact these guys __________ Capacitor research |

That's hardly the same thing. I can see an open source project allowing other then developers to mess with their code (actually it's their right afaik ) but not a competitive gaming company.
Did you check my link I'm tempted to apply myself __________ Capacitor research |

Edited by: Ticondrius on 19/03/2005 00:35:55 True, but it proves the idea works.
As for competitive...EVE needs more manpower to fix the problems or it won't BE competitive very much longer.

Fine, the volunteer idea blows..happy? I'm just annoyed that despite the genuine need for more programming manpower, CCP does not, nor seems to HAVE ever posted any job openings on thier website. I'm UK, and part of the EU too...a work visa or whatever is needed aught to be bloody easy.
