What ever happened to good ol' fashioned 1v1 contests?
The real true tests of ones' abilities as a pilot/warrior seem to be sinking into a forgotten era. In my early days in a corp in CA, I can remember many occasions where, as I transited from empire into Curse space (or vice-versa), I'd run across single pilots who'd actually ask me to fight them.....challenge me to a dual, as it were. And on some of those occasions I'd consent, alternately victorious or dieing about evenly. On other occasions, if I had no armament on, or was carrying valuable cargo, I'd decline and go my way.
There was no worry about "even" matches......I had a blasterrax challenge me at one gate while I was flying a load of zydrine into empire in my dominix. The dom was setup for anti-frig gate defence....armor tanked, scramblers, webbers, nos's and large smartbombs as well as a full dronebay.
I asked "are you sure you want to do this?", not at all sure of my setup against a dedicated shipkiller like his, and wondering if the better part of valour meant to get my valuable cargo in to empire and quit mucking about....
He answered "fight me, dammit....or you're not a man", or words to that effect (content cleaned up to avoid lockage )
Well, needless to say, I've always been a man (no surgical procedures involved), so I typed "Tallyho" into local and we went at it. We pounded on eachother for a few minutes and his ship finally popped.
Luckily I was able to turn off all the smartbombs in enough time they did not take his pod (I don't podkill unless the pilot has an appreciable bounty....it's a matter of some kind of twisted ethics, don't ask).
After all this we sat at the gate and chatted about setups, ship preferences and whatnot for almost an hour before he logged off at safespot.
The points I'm trying to make are....these were friendly duals between agreed to adversaries. Pilots roaming space in search of the rush of combat. And I've done enough fleet crap to know that THAT is not combat......any group of individuals possessed of enough skills and hardware can mob together and kill about everything in their path.....it takes no skill.
I miss the pilots who have the guts to ply space alone in search of likeminded pilots to test their mettle against.
THAT is the true sign of a warrior. Are they still about? With all the low/sec gate camping, asteroid belt ganking, and other persuits of questionable nature followed by players in this game....it's becomming increasingly difficult to assay the field by the single combat pilot.
People seek safety in numbers. This is a natural occurance in humans and something that only a very few manage to consciously remove from their gaming characters in such a way that they can muster the moxxy to play the "gunslinger".
Were are you? The forlorn outlaw sitting silently just out of gun range.....the noble knight seeking to add another pennant to his entourage. This post is dedicated to all those possessed of the intestinal fortitude and wherewithall to walk the road less travelled. The ones who relie completely on what wits and training they themselves possess. The ones with the nobility and honour necessary to remain gracious and polite thru victory or adversity.
The real warriors!

The answer to the question may be that it's "time honored", but "player honored"? Good luck getting that one out of (most) of them.

...actually when I saw this thread I remembered a 1vs1 that I had. me in a 'ranis and the other in a maled.
...I got totally wasted in that fight
It was in that day that I leared maledictions > taranis.
..it was a good fight thou. it showed to me that some pirates have a nice code of honour and I respect them for that -------------------

I rarely hunt in packs, if ever. And I'd almost always accept a 1v1 challenge (assuming I was in a combat ship). I'm just not very good at it.
You're right, 'hunting' in blobs is a lot easier, but it just isn't fun to me. ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |

I agree. I would love to have Vendettas in the game. Just keep the basic corp / alliance war the same, but translate it to individuals. Then perhaps have some kind of complex where people can go to fight it out, and others allowed in to watch in a shuttle or something.
But it's only a paper moon...

i have always apreciated 1 on 1 fights and i have always kept my word
ofcourse i made mistakes.. but nothing serious just getting to far away or close to the agreed starting combat range.
other then that i fight fare...
though.. 1 mOo challenged me and a corp mate to a fight... 2 Bs 1 bs i did point out to him atleast 3 times before we fought that he wouldnt make it, a bit suicidal just like that rax pilot
Taranis vs Taranis are the hardest inty fights in EVE though i think crow vs crow has first place

Hmm, made me think of a 1vs1, Proph vs proph out in 0,0, very fun:) Me against a pirate that had attacked a corpm8 a few min earlier. Fair fights are kinda far between theese days=/ And I enjoyed that fight, even if I hadn't won;) |

Half the problem is that if someone accepts a 1v1, he's probably got 5 mates ready to jump in and WTFPWN you. _________________

I recently had a 1v1 Harpy(me) V Jaguar, was really fun & i won.
Only other time i have had a 1v1 (excluding non-combat fitted ships) is Crow(me) V Crusader, wasn't as lucky on that one though
