City of God was a refreshing change from the usual Hollywood mush.
Edit / Man Bites Dog is one of my favourites too

Not in any order really.
Lord of the Rings - for capturing the book as near as a film could. Matrix - ground breaking first time around. Saving Private Ryan - for the beach scene alone. Seven - disturbing first time around. Alien - scared the **** out of me as a kid. The Fith Element - for sheer sci-fi escapism. Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - think you appreciate this more as a brit and a Londoner. Snatch - same again. The Thing - same reason as Alien, I was one disturbed kid. Reign of Fire - its got a dragon in it.
Any old war films or westerns.

My favourites have to be part of the tartan asia extreme series, in no paticular order they are:
Batoru rowaiaru (Battle Royale) - Kinji Fukasaku's best work, violent, fun and a shocking look at a future japanese society.
Ringul (The Ring) - The original, none of that dramatised crap. The original movie screenplayed from K¶ji Suzuki's classic horror novel, made in romania .
Ju-On (The Grudge) - The original movie from 2003 directed by Takashi Shimizu, none of that sarah michelle gellar "omg nasty ghosty" crap.
I also have to agree with these of Valan's :
Matrix - ground breaking first time around. Saving Private Ryan - for the beach scene alone, and the fact it captures war perfectly. Seven - disturbing first time around, morgan freeman at his best. Alien - scared the **** out of me as a kid, the john hurt scene is classic. The Fith Element - for sheer sci-fi escapism, and a well put together GFX package. The Thing - A purely frightening look at what could be lurking, one of john carpenters best.
i agree with all of these, hell of a set of films... i also include on my list the following:
Predator - Anything invisible that's trying to kill you is scary Total Recall - The woman with three boobies still gets me every time. Event Horizon - Excellent storyline, and very frightening in places. All Bond Films - Pure british charisma at it's finest. Pulp Fiction - John Travolta and Sam Jackson made cult history with this. Schindlers List - A good view of the savage and ruthless side of human nature.

My favourites are Schindler's List and American Beauty and I really can't choose between them. I like them because they left me stunned in a way that not even a bazillion dollar's worth of special effects ever could Other favourites for the same reason are Leon, Requiem For A Dream and American History X.

Fight Club, on the other hand, was ace. But we don't talk about Fight Club.

Garden State - Moving, easy to relate to for me. My favourite film to date. Go see it for yourself. Soundtrack fits like a glove.
Napoleon Dynamite - funny as hell, so many random and pointless scenes but a fab film. "Your such a frickin idiot, GOSH!"
The Goonies - classic 80s adventure movie. "This was my dream, my wish, and it didn't come true, so I'm taking it back. I'm takin' em all back." Best lines ever.
The Lost Boys - class 80s adventure with vampires. None of this Blade Trinity or Underworld crap. Holy water in supersoakers, genius.
Edward Scissorhands - This movie is deep, it goes beyond the whole "Omg I have scizz0rs for hands LOLOL" front.
Fifth Element - classic sci fi. Also has a scantily clad Milla Jovovich!
Spiderman 2 - You'll laugh at me for this, but this film is great. Once you hear the soundtrack it makes more sense. Plus it has my favourite bands on it, The Ataris, Dashboard Confessional, Yellowcard, Taking Back Sunday.
Donnie Darko - Most time spent after a film going "W T F !?" _____________________ "They arent giggling about his spelling, they are giggling at the fact that he's a ******* moron" - DrunkenOne |

*gasp* Can't stop... laughing!
EDIT - And to whoever said Battle Royale was a look into Future Japanese culture - Was it just me, or did some writer just think 'I'll do Lord of the Flies. But with GUNS!'? Meh, it was still a good film if only for the hilariously over the top deaths. Couldn't help think it was a bit shallow, though.
Original Ring rocks. Although (again) I didn't really 'get' the story, it just seemed like an excuse to have some random scary crap. ;o ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |
