I am a Caldari, Clavice fighter at the state war academy. What ship should I get after the rookie ship? Thanks.

Kestral or Merlin
Kestral = missiles
Merlin = Guns & Missiles
Kestral i would say is better for missions...
Get some info on a good set-up (i dont know anything about them so i cant help you with that) and what skills you need to use it then train those skills whilst mining, then when you have them buy your ship of choice and kit it out.

If your still in the rookie frigate, I would advise getting a condor, not only are they insanely cheap the're, a good stepping stone to the more pwerfull frigates.

Condor, 20k ISK or so, very good until you actually train the skills to fly a Merlin or Kestrel.
Those require Caldari Frigate 3, and if you don't want to just be destroyed and lose a 150k, you also need to be able to fit them properly, and that requires skills in the Engineering, Mechanic, Navigation, Missiles, and Gunnery categories to be at a decent level. Those ships will need to be outfitted with decent shield boosters, afterburners, capacitor power relays, missile launchers, and you'll need to know what you're doing with them. At least, if you want to survive during level 2 missions or in 0.5 - 0.6 belts.
The Condor, on the other hand, is fast by itself, you can put the guns and a shield on it and be good to go. Hunt in 0.7 - 0.8 asteroid belts, or do level 1 missions.

kes or mer all others are a waste of time, you will change it a week later for a kes or mer and as for when insure it FULL and have a play if you lose it no biggy just get another but you will need missle + gun for mer.... missles only for kes. both are very good

Thorax is a cruiser, so yes. It's also 7mil or so just to buy it. And you'll need the skills for it first. So save up for it, but get a frigate first.

dont rush into bigger ship to soon ( i know you cant wait! ) learn with small cheap stuff first, BS are not the be all and end all of EVE

an didn't realise they were different classes. I'll prob work my way up through a condor then a merlin and eventually a thorax or smething at some point

Since your caldari, it will probably be alot cheaper and quicker to just go from caldari frigates to caldari cruisers instead of going into gallente cruisers. try going for a Blackbird or a Caracal as your first cruiser
