I have Eve through steam and when I start it up a black screen pops up as if the game is going to start. I get the "eve mouse" and then the screen just stays black. If I shift tab for my steam messenger and then undo it the image remains on the black background although "faded." When I ctrl alt delete it doesn't say Eve is not responding. Updated my drivers, restarted my computer, verified cache integrity and defraged the files.
Initially for the past few days my game has been crashing randomly. Yesterday I was warping to a gate and hitting the jump button when I got close, game froze, kicked me out and when I tried to restart it the above happened. |

use the ccp standalone client rather than steam client CCP's standalone eve client
it tends to be way less problematic
but before ya start the big download....... try updating directx.... usually for me a splash n crash (black screen) is down to a bad directx installation Microsoft Directx installer |

I do have an new computer. Nothing has changed on the computer while the error started happening. "Get a new computer man" is not good advice and comes off kind of dicklishly. |

Ok, I sounded a bit too harsh, i am sorry.
But really, 1000 things may go wrong with hardware - what good can you get from General Discussion? Better to make a more detailed report on Technical Issues. |

No worries I wasn't offended, simply stating how it comes off. Text doesn't convey ones intentions very well.
I tried making a thread there but I haven't really got any response. I figure here even though some of the responses will be less than useful at least someone will come through with something. |

It sounds to me like your GPU could be overheating - this commonly causes black screen and/or crashes and freezes like you mentioned. Check your cooling - are your fans working OK? Run the PC with the case open - you should be able to see if the GPU fan is turning this way. Could also be that the system's clogged up with dust! Just get some compressed air in a can and give the insides a good blast.
Otherwise, have you overclocked or modified your system in any way? Could just be general system instability. Would help us to help you if you could post your system specs and any recent changes/mods you've made. |

I thought something may be over heating but that's not the case at all. It's cold in my room and I can run other just as demanding games just fine. Probably should clean it though regardless.
Ill try this. |

So i used %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\ which is for vista with steam. I have windows 7 but there is no windows 7 with steam and it says 7 and vista have the same places and what not.
I put that in and got 4 folders and a textpad named history. The CCP_eve_tranquility and steam_steamapps folders both have a chache and settings folder. The other two in there do not. Do I delete all the cached folders in the whole thing? I don't want to lose the settings if it can be avoided. because redoing the HUD is a pain the ass. |

My confusion comes from having 4 different files.
c_program files (x86)_ccp_eve
c_program files (x86)_steam_steamapps_common_eve online
c_program files (x86)_ccp_eve_tranquility
c_program files (x86)_steam_steamapps_common_eve online_tranquility
The bottom two both have a "cache" and "settings" sub folder.
Do I delete both caches? I want to just delete the cache and leave the settings intact and see if that alone will fix it but im not sure if i'm deleting both or not.
Not sure if i'm 32 or 64 bit. I'm pretty computer illiterate. How do I check my specs? |

If you have files marked with the "(x86)", then you are 64-bit. In your control panel, the icon marked system will be your computers specs.
I've never deleted those files separately, and had the clear cache solution work for me, so I can't tell you which to delete, and that deleting only one will work.
I can tell you that installing the EVE client in the program files folder that is not marked with the (x86) eliminated a lot of problems for me.
In my opinion, uninstalling and wiping all the caches, and then reinstalling outside of steam in the non-(x86) program files folder might be the best thing for your problem. It seems like a pain in the ass, but its been my experience that trying to avoid a pain in the ass when it comes to a fix is an even larger pain in the ass, which lasts 4x as long.
Of course this is all mostly opinion since I don't know much about your system. If someone replies after this with a solution that sounds better, you might want to go with that. |

you can delete the lot. You have both ccp_eve_tranquility and steam_steamapps_common_eve online_tranquility because you tried the standalone version of eve, so now you have two installs.
probably not going to help though, as you still reported your issue with the standalone installation, which is a fresh install, with fresh cache...
edit: oh hold it, read past your preference to keep settings delete the cache folders in there only in that case. I highly doubt its the settings breaking stuff for ya. As I said, its a bit moot though, as you have this issue in a new installation as well. These should be the steps you should take when trying to figure out why Eve isn't working right.
1.Clear Cache 2.Reinstall Eve on steam 3.Install stand alone 4.Throw computer out window.

This sounds like the simplest and most ideal option. How exactly would I find this if i'm running it through steam?
*Directx how? I already have that installed i'm pretty sure, most games require some form of it or another IIRC.

i have had directx installations get fubarred many times by 1. crap graphics drivers 2. game update patches & 3. bad windows registry errors.
usually for me a splash n crash ( ie see eve splash screen followed by a black screen) is caused by directx screwing up. |

what I would suggest is uninstall every copy of eve that you have on your computer. go to where the cache is stored and delete everything. you will lose your settings, but it will clear it out. if you are really that opposed to losing the settings, don't delete it, but rather move it to a folder on your desktop or documents folder. just make sure there is no "CCP" folder under the local folder. then go to your documents folder and look for a folder called "eve" and delete anything there (your fittings that you made with any kind of fitting manager are stored here so move this too instead of deleting if you want to save it. once these two folders are gone and there are no remaining copies of eve left on your system. get the manual installer off of the eve website and install it from there. if this all does not work, then it is something wrong with your computer. |

If you're using Windows Vista, you may need to set it to run in Windows XP Compatibility Mode (and possibly Run as Administrator); I had the same problem when I tried to launch in Vista.
So far, Windows 7 is clear of that particular issue. |

I'm not sure if you fixed the problem or not but i have just had it too, I managed to fix it by going into the steam/steamapps/common/eveonline and running"Eve.exe (Safe Mode) it then booted up and updated with a 100mb patch and now it's working fine. :)

What I mean to say is how exactly do i fix my direct x?
Would direct x be the problem however if i don't have any issues running any other games?
yes ive had eve splash n crash before even though counterstrike and battlefield ran fine.
go to Directx installer
download and run it..... reboot when it installs
then update graphics card drivers
vista comes with directx 10 natively installed but eve online uses directx 9 not 10 as vista is horrendously buggy directx gets fubbarred alot.
to avoid fubars with directx you have 2 options..... downgrade to win xp (uses directx 9 natively) or upgrade to win7 (uses directx 11 natively)
the latter is the better option.
since i ditched vista for win 7 i no longer get splash n crash Everytime you buy something that says "made in china" you are helping the rising unemployment in your own country unless your from china, Buy locally produced goods and help create more jobs. |
