Do you think that fleet size is now out of control?
current max fleet size is 250 people in whatever sized ships they want. i find the general laws for most fleets in real life navy or movies to be that there are a larger number of small ships and fewer large ones. in some situation an alliance can have a sub cap fleet of 150 flying around and still be able to match it with 100 capitals and super capitals in the same fleet receiving the same link bonuses, this is completely off.
This is why i want to discuss the below changes to the current fleet system based on something similar to the AT setup.
firstly i would like to make clear that this isn't just a nerf of the big guys.
part 1;
set a scoring system for ships in space ie;
Super capital 9 points Capital 7 points battleship 5 points BC 4 Cruiser 3 Destroyer 2 Frigate 1
Then give a squad the ability to field a set number of points based on skills to receive fleet bonuses, based on my numbers above i would like to see that set at max 35, this would mean you can field 5 BS and 3 cruisers in a gang, the squad leader should not count as any points so that would allow for 1 extra BS. You can exceed the number of allocated points in a squad by just 1 and you will then loose the bonuses for the entire squad as there is not enough logistical abilities to support and coordinate a large squad.
part 2;
Leave the Wing command skill the same as current
change leadership role into 2 new skills - Squad Logistics Squad Chief
Squad Chief will work in the same as leadership allowing you to share the points between a max of 12 squad members,
Squad Logistics will work as each level you gain 7 points to allocate to members of your squad. (again based on my numbers in part 1)
Fleet Command - should also be split into a Fleet logistics and Command section where at level 5 it allows for the max points to be commanded in each wing and a maximum number of wings to be setup. if one wing was to exceed the maximum control points then its wing would not receive the bonuses from the fleet commander.
Overall this would mean that gangs of cruisers would see little impact however it would make 200 person BS fleets almost impossible to field without the correct logistics to provide the important gang links
Id like to know what others think to my idea
Thanks Vulfen

What would this accomplish? People would just use more fleets. Crimewatch 2.0: Protecting stupid people & rewarding lazy people. This hurts the smart & industrious people by making their intelligence & industry provide them with less benefit over the stupid & lazy people. ~ Ruby Porto |

it would simply require more people to train the skills correctly so it can be done.
and if you are in a different fleet then you still need to arrange a second set of fleet links for your fleet, i.e more command ships on field or more T3 linkers that are probable and relatively paper thin.
That allocates more risk to some of it.
But the biggest thing it would do i mean that large alliances like goon swarm would need to take more care in the fleet to make sure that bonus's are allocated correctly, not just --- log on-in fleet-on titan-jump-pray you don't die and try and shoot the right things.
for smaller groups it also means more care as just 1 person in the wrong place without bonuses could disrupt ships making them move slower or tank less and that makes it all the more important for them.
the smaller your numbers the greater impact loosing just 1 has. |

Or, more likley, people just wouldn't bother with links. Absolutley ANY aliance can field more than five battleships, so all you would do is push fleet co-ordination out of the game and into voice comms completley. Guess who that favours?
Hint: It's the big guys, the people like goonswarm who already have all the infrastructure for this kind of thing in place. Little gang of nobodies trying to use eve voice? Nope, now they have literally no way of co-ordinating a dozen BS. |

lots of ppl can make use of a fleet structure that will give them so many large ships. they need to be able to warp to friendly ships, have key ships on watch list and broadcast to eachother. fleets are about communications between players, not compositions.
basically, tearing apart and over complicating the fleet system to make things more like real life is a bad thing to do for a bad reason.
also, when they need to be, RL fleets aren't small and designed with proportions of big and small ships in mind.
after the Bismark sank the Hood, the english notified all ships in the area, they didnt care what size or fleet composition to use to sink the bismark.
in the normandy landings the allies threw everything they had including the kitchen sinks at the beaches. if they could have fielded a thousand battleships and carriers, they would have. |

Navy vet here. fleet comps are designed to, in the real world, adhere to a general mission purpose. ship size doesnt matter except for the handling characteristics. for example in a carrier strike group, frigates are in the fleet to get in the way of torpedoes and provide fire support if necessary. realistically a carrier strike group is like a squad in eve and the fleets themselves have a number of squads depending on what region they are patroling, and as far as countering blobbing, America has the biggest "ca[ital fleet" in the world (most carriers) and is not above using all of them on the same target if the situation warrents. your real world argument fails there. not saying a more involved or interesting fleet mechanic isn't a bad idea, just one that is complicated and hard to manage, compared tot he current setup, is a bad idea. most of real world fleet communications are just instructions on where to move what to shoot and what somebody sees, as well as status reports and stuff.
tl"dr over complicating fleet stuff is bad, but a tweak to make it more interesting/fun is not a horrible idea |
