So with recent csm discussions on the removal of ice from high sec space, and remembering old discusions from devs I had a thought.
CCP could remove Ice fields and replace them with Comets.
There would be 3 or 4 comets for each of the major factions so 12 or 16 total. Each comet orbits thru number of systems spending a few days in the outter reaches of each system then moving on to apear in the next system in it's orbit a few days latter, giving it the illusion of travel time. each commet moves thru the system it's in at between 120 and 150 meter per second. I know this is faster than most ships used to mine ice but thats a challenge for the players of eve to overcome.
This would also make for the possibility of other interactions, mining groups that follow the comets, corps that claim areas of high sec war decing other corps for coming into their systems following the comets.
While this would change only where you mine not how, I think it would be enough of a change to make ice mining a little more fun than it is currently, as well as more interesting. |

Taking away the icefields and adding in comets (Like those stated in the OP) would be a great idea.

Controlling the comet would provide resources, and a wardec would allow you to control the supply of the market, allowing you to make ISK.
Although this idea needs more refining before implementation into the game, I think the concept is a beautiful one. |

ok first refinement, instead of mining the comet proper, you mine small bits that fall off the comet as it moves thru space. these would have a finite amount of matrial in them and the comet spaces a random ammount at a smei random intervul. |

i like the idea minus the ridiculous comet speed.
50 to 80 meters per second would be more practical. |

I'm not interested in mining, but I most certainly would love to get in on some defensive/offensive comet action! |

There was talk about it, or just rumors, to introduce comets to WH space.
But I like your idea even better.

While I like this idea... one thing to be considered (and I'm no market expert) is how this could effect the high-sec POS system. Also; I'm not sure if giving null dwellers one more resource to import due to a very low supply in high sec is a good idea.
Personally though; I would rather see asteroid belts redefined. Instead of sporadic clusters of rocks... I'd like to see actual belts around a planet... or even the realistic asteroid belt of it literally being a belt that spans around the system. Just make the existing belt warp-ins go to periodic places in the belts... and when the warp-in is mined out; you have to travel to other portions of the belt... like having an inty pilot fly around the belt until they find a nice rock heavy area to mine.... Just a thought. My Features & Ideas Discussions Thread(s) -á-á-á-á [ Loot Log: Small Functionality Update Request ] |

The problem with that is that it makes it much easier for bots to hide. Six months in the hole... it changes a man. |

That's what probes, and directional scan are for.
As far as bots are concerned; enhancements to our gameplay should not be limited or hindered because a portion of the populace who cheats might get a slight perceived advantage. A bot mining off warp-in (and thus off-grid) is no different than that same miner performing the task in a hidden asteroid belt that has to be probed out.

While I agree it will have a market impact, I believe it will have less of an impact on the market than the idea currently presented by the CSM which is to remove ice from high sec with no replacement.
to Satav's comment about the speed, I suggested that speed to make the mining different you have to use different fits for your ships, you have to think about how to make them go fast, and mine, or be able to hold cargo I can easily get a hulk doing 127m/s while running 3 strip miners some tank. Others should have no problem figuring out how to go even faster.
And those that don't want to go fast would be able to mine the drop offs as decribed in my refining post. |

Excellent idea. It would probably also make the game even more realistic, since there haven't been comets in it yet. And the idea about mining the trail for limited resources sounds pretty good too. Maybe 5-10 units of ice from one chunk falling off of the comet as it flies around would suffice, some bigger pieces maybe up to 50 units. It's not a lot, but still enough to make sure not everyone follows this one big chunk of ice mowing it's way through space.
The speed however, may be a concern. I have trouble seeing how an Orca would be able to keep up with 120-150m/s. Maybe if the comet only moves about 50-70 m/s, it would be easier to mine it.
Another detail, perhaps having 2 Comets for each region would be better. Sure, there'd be even more Ice in null-sec, but nobody would move their entire fleet of mining ships through hostile territory just to chase down an ice cube.
And to what Aidan Patrick wrote, asteroid belts could also use some redefining. Having a bunch of small rocks lying in clusters at seemingly random spots in space isn't very realistic at all. Instead, having a giant super-belt would be better, and there would just have to be several warp-in points in it. This could be implemented whenever they decide to make the rocks have several different ores in them (I've heard rumors that they're planning on doing that at some point). |

Really? That's kinda not smart IMO... I don't think nullsec needs yet one more resource that's exclusive to it. But that's just my two cents.
On super-belts, I'd really like to see them happen... a lot. [ Loot Log: Small Functionality Update Request ] [ A New (Non-Combat) Exploration Idea ] |

I think comets need to be stationary normal and move during down times until they fix the server WTF a major object moved complaint. (ie think of a outpost suddenly moving) until the fix the back end that disallows real time belt respawning and few other time based mechanics.
Also what effect comets have in lower security space. You shouldnt make exlcusive resources.
I would love to see system wide belts.

an orca can easily do 130m/s with the proper fit, or faster with good skills.
Never said comets would not enter low security space, they might.
I proposed 4 per empire so that they could cycle and there would always be one in a system per empire at any given time if it was 4 days in system 4 days out you could have one in system 2 days later a second arrives in a different system. 2 days after a 3 arrives and the first leaves, 2 more days the fourth arrives in another system still and the second leaves, and so on.
I understand at the moment the server may have some issues with massive moving objects, but that would be part of development of this feature. As personally having a comet in game that doesn't move isn't a comet it's a large chunk of ice, and thats just as boring as ice mining is now.
Could we have more comets in low sec null sec and wormhole space sure, it would be an interesting and complete revamp of ice mining.
Could this help revamp normal mining, I don't think so. personally I think the system belt and planetary ring mining are much better ideas for regular mining. |
