Great program, but guess what...
Christopher Eccleston just resigned from the role and won't be in the next series.

yeah, i'm a bit unhappy about this...
He was great in the first episode last week, and the preview of the on that's on this week looks cool.
Hopefully there'll be enough money/publicity involved in the series for him to want to come back.
I respect what he did by leaving though, IMO family always comes first.

He never quit. It was on the radio this morning actuly that himself and the director have only agreed to 1 season of Dr Who. He doesnt want to be type cast and they feel that dont want to over run its course and ruin it

the first episode was pretty good, even if it was a bit cheesy, but i guess that's what they wanted from a Dr. Who series :) Think I'd have to watch more of them to really say whether its good or bad he's quitting/not carrying on with another series, but so far so good.

Going on the first episode he makes a fantasic Dr. But killing him off to replace with someone else is all part of being the Dr.
Gonna be a hard one to follow if he keeps up the standard from the first episode though. ___________________________________________ http://www.eve-tutor.com

Tbh the first episode was crappy as it was more of an introduction... Rumor has it, the next ones great.
Apparently Alan Davies is favourite to become the next Dr Who (he is well known as Jonathan Creek). He's good for the role too I guess, but Eccleston rules at it. --------

I heard David Tennant who starred in that recent Casanova thing on bbc3 was most likely to be the new Doctor.
The BBC website did list a lot of possible candidates, including Richard E Grant, who I think could play the role wonderfully.

i thought it was rubbish in the same hilarious and entertaining way that Dr Who has been rubbish since it began, shortly after the end of the last ice-age. Good family entertainment aimed at young kids and their nostalgic parents.
Bill Nighy would be my choice for the next one.... the other options are pretty dreadful imo.

Alan Davies sounds good for the Doctor, he would go better with the trademark scarf that, dissapointingly, Christopher Eccleston was void of.
Ian Holm would make the best Doctor ever in the world, but as if they'd pay for him. ------------

Ian Holm would take us back to the stuffy William Hartnell type doctor which I think is a great step back.
Please no Hugh Grant, and Alan Davis would be a joke. Just someone who isn't a middle/upper class ponce!

I saw David Warner listed as a possible candidate, he'd be good but wouldn't be suitable since they want it aimed at the 'vogue generation' (whatever tf that is)
Most interestingly, Mark Gattis (of The League of Gentleman fame) has penned one of the episodes, which should be worth watching if none of the others are. Come to think of it, the local shop would be a good setting for a dr who episode :D

Even tho i like christopher eccleston, i have to say after watching both episodes, and hoping the 1st was just a 1 off in terms of how sh*te it was i have to say all involved should be ashamed, what a pure unadulterated pile of sh*t, i cant help but think that the opportunity was there to do something special and create genuinely dark almost horror type show that wouldve garnered a lot of fans but instead they seem to have tried to appeal to all ages and cross sections and have failed miserably on all accounts.
very very very very dissapointed.
unless of course i missed the point and they wanted a cheesey comic camp load of a*se
I picked up this ace book today everyone rates it as a must buy for the budding military genius, tho ive decided to rename it as "Sun Tzu's art of the bloody obvious" |

WTF?! Farscape was a breath of fresh air to TV sci-fi! There was more original concept in one episode of Farscape than a whole season of Trek/Trek wannabe clones!
Thought the second episode of Dr Who was a bit disappointing 'tho Bring on the Daleks!

i agree that the cheesy style is strange for doctor who and a more darker version would be cool but dont forget the style changes with each doctor so there is a chance it will change when he dies and regenerates. Btw if that johnathan creek guy gets the role of doctor i can just picture him oh a space station confusing some alien with a card trick lol
on a side note tho i like the second episode on that staion 5 bil years from now so maybee the new comedy style we are getting may be enjoyable and its not a bad thing we need entertaining programs and this may be one. [glad hes back] oh in case you have not guessed im a old fan lol

Maybe its my aging memory distorting things, but Doctor Who has *always* been campy, cheesy, borderline crappy acting. The title "Doctor Who" literally makes me think of that kind of show... its a bit harder to appreciate now, as compared to when I was a kid watching it, but the new ones still an excellent show. Think the second episode was just a build up to the rest of the season. Really hammering home to Rose exactly wtf shes decided to do...
It was great... hope the rest is as good...

The program makers seem to have lost the concept of "cliffhangers".
I remember watching Dr Who and being totally immersed until the music kicked in at the end, and you were so shocked that it could finish at such a crucial part of the story.
The next week was spent wondering if the Doctor would survive this particular scrape. (although he always did )

I dont think eccleston should quit though, he makes a good doctor, just needs to loose the leather jacket.

TBH, I'm still making my mind up, it's got potential but I hope the scripts improve a bit.
Being an old git I remember when Dr Who first came out, so I still tend to compare it to the William Harnell days (yes TV REALLY was black & white then)

Edited by: Maggot on 13/04/2005 20:47:12 I thought it was so good I had a tear in my eye. My two daughters (5 and 3) sat and watched it in awe. When it finshed the elder turned around and said "I want Doctor Who on DVD". Cheeky monkey.
All the following week the eldest kept asking about Doctor Who, and they were both very well behaved on Saturday ;) she blubbed at the end of the world in the second episode, but found the third a bit scary.
Great to see my kids enjoying it as much as I did.

I agree!
Haven't seen any of the new Dr.Who yet...Seeing my parents who live in a cave and have no tv Read in the paper that one of the older dr's criticised Eccleston's performance, thought he was too straight-laced for the role I think.
