I fly Amarr/Caldari/Gallente ships up to BS.
Won't fly T3
What will be a beast for my purpose?

Just about anything that deals lots of EM/Thermal. In high go Ashimmu: fun ship, 100% damage bonus, no need for anything more. In safe low/null, maybe Nightmare. Great kill power for the BS rats. If you're not in safe space and just ratting, try a Harby... If you've got more isk than sense go Nightmare. 
Depends on where you go, whether you're in blue space, whether you're JUST ratting or doing anoms, tons of other stuff not in your post. |

For ratting you don't really need a lot of tank or range so DPS is pretty well king.
Geddon > Cheap / Navy Geddon, Abaddon > Middle/ Nightmare, Paladin > Expensive.
Outside Amarr Raven isn't bad with EM Furies, Rigors and Painter. Domi's good with Guards, DDA's and OD-Tracking Links.
Coun't say with Anoms since I use to live in different space, don't know if Bloods Neut there but that doesn't matter so much in Belts since you can kill BS pretty quick. |

If we are talking about serious ratting, i suppose then that we are talking about low/null sec. In which case the problem is not so much the rats than escaping the other players. I'd fly something smaller than a BS. HAC or BC for example. |

That was painful too watch. Lesson: keep an eye on your assets and don't PvP in mining barges w/o ECM Drones. Or just not PvP in barges. |
