This may or may not help you. Hope it does tho.
I've noticed that 90% of my disconects occur when my client is idle for an extended period of time. Usually when sitting at a gate that has no trafic or sitting in station.
When in station I've found that it disconnects less if I have a highly active chat window open like the help or module and munitions channel. or both...
While in space I found that orbitting something with AB or some active module cycling away will prevent a disconnect. If you know you will be afk at a gate for a while, just orbit the video screen thingy.
So long as you have some sort of interaction between your client and the server you will cut way back on disconnects.
I use cable now but I never had this "idle" disconnect problem when I used DSL. Not once that I can remember. Well... The "Connection to Server Lost" is also killing me lately so I turned up the debugging on my Firewall (no I'm not using a Personal Firewall, I'm running state-full firewalling via iptables on my Linux Gateway Box).
And whoops:

It looks like something happend lately that causes my Firewall to drop connections since it believes that they don't belong to the session opened by the EVE Client.
My guess is that it is somehow server related.

I'm getting several connection losses a day (also on a cable modem connection).
This never used to happen :(

yeah, i have recently experienced a couple of disconnects. i can log back in straight away.
i thought i was just my crappy ISP because none of my Corp mates got disconnected until the other day when myself and a Corp mate who were in the same system i believe got disconnected at exactly the same time. again, no-one else in our corp got disconnected. i do believe this is a server related issue.
i also get (from time to time) a moment where the EvE client just disappears. no warning, no error message. the process just disappears. but this happens even less than the current occasional disconnects.

I get this too, and I blamed it on my wireless network being wonky... but maybe not. :/
Not sure how to tell them to fix, or anything.. sometimes while mining I get some incredible lag. Which confuses me as mining is not a graphics intensive process. (Drag x raw minerals to x cargo container)

I, too, have this same problem; and I , too, have tried the things to pacify it (help channel, active module, etc. what machzero said), and most of the time they work for a while, but it still disconnects me 3/10 times (very lengthy AFK's). I, too, have a firewall built into my router which is also on a cable modem connection. It is a LinkSys, and has SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection), which basically means it will block incoming packets which did not orginate (or get sent out of) a particular port. I noticed a slight difference in how often it logs me if I disable the firewall (managed from an internal webpage at 192.168.1.1), but it doesnt completely fix the problem, so I'm not risking it being off. I can also "port forward", or manage which ports are always allowed to whatever local ip I want, and that didn't help. This seems like it's been ever since EXODUS' first release.
