Well, as you can see, The Merlin has a fairly average cargo hold at 130m3. That is usually quite sufficient for the majority of light cargo missions. Some of the other cargo mission may require a destroyer sized hold plus a few expanders or even an industrial. The destroyer is a great cargo runner though.
As to trading, well, no you aren't going to have much profit trading in any frigate, unless you are reselling very low volume goods like skillbooks to players in out of the way areas. You'll need an industrial to really do trading with NPCs.
As for fighting, both the Kestrel and the Merlin are superb ships that will give you consistent performance in a surprisingly broad number of NPC scenarios. Frigates are less than cannon fodder in PvP though unless used as limited EW platforms. The Merlin is a long range, space superiority fighter.

Really, if you do get into PvP frigates are the cheap easy disposable tacklers. You get in, warp scramble/web, and wait for the big guns to show up. As my CEO says, "If you frig pilots dont come back in a pod, you aint doin your job..."

The merlin also is a fairly handy early miner. You can use 2 miners (for mining duh) and 2 missile launchers to fend of little rats

Frigates are for zooming in and circle bigger ships, keeping them occupied and web them and mess with them in general, making it easier for your bigger friends to come and finish them off. Oh, and fight other frigates. Frigates are mainly expendable though, and rely on quantity more than anything.

"I don't know what we're up against, but I'm willing to put wave after wave of frigates at your disposal!" ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" "It's a lot like being a walking house that eats lettuce." (Hurray temp sig!) |
