The other morning we were chasing a guy called Con'Mal around Ourapheh. At one stage he warped to the Manarq gate, then we saw him warp off towards Ourapheh II. We pursued but he had gone. A bit of scanning showed he was back near the gate, but our guys at the gate didn't see him. I don't remember the exact details (Agent Neolithicalwolf and Agent Kenshin were there at the time) but someone ended up warping from the gate towards planet II and seeing Con'Mal flash up on the overview for an instant as he warped from the gate. So I warped from the gate towards planet II with the intention of dropping bookmarks as Con'Mal had done, to try and get closer to him.
I also saw him flash up on overview as I went, so it was clear that this was definitely the correct line of travel. What happened is pretty bizarre and I don't expect it to ever happen again to me. I warped back to my first bookmark which turned out to be about 1.3 million kilometres from the gate, and there he was 70km from me. The odds of that happening are pretty minute I guess, but anyway, sometimes you get really lucky 8). He was aligned to warp and had more stabs than we had tackling, so he got away in the end and logged two systems over, but still, pretty freaky.
No! As in, that's not rare at all. I've personally busted loads of safespots that way. It doesn't always work though. In my experience it may have to do with what kind of ship and navigation skills you and your target have. Drink up, shoot in. Let the beating begin. Distributor of pain. Your loss becomes my gain...

If a new target warps in before the scan completes that wasn't present when the scan started, that target isn't picked up (I believe, I'm not 100% sure on that one yet).
I can confirm you do pick up these new targets, out of complete fluke one of my scans was ending as a hostile fleet was hitting a new safe as they were bouncing around in system. I immediately warped in and called the troops.. we caught a few of them the rest had no mood to fight after being caught that way.

Excellent post! It filled in all the vacant gaps that I have after 3 months of playing with these things. One question though...is it possible to scan for secure cans and if so what option do I choose after hitting analyze?

I have *****ed several F11 safespots. They're no more challenge than normal, you just have to use the observator probe first.

To see how this whole probing thing works I did the following: 1. Read the long and detailed advice above. 2. Hopped into my helios and headed to the system next to [system removed for privacy] armed with some 3AU scan probes. 3. Found an industrial on scanner. It belongs to a friend, but I was just probing it, not trying to steal it 4. ascertained it was on a midwarp by scanning with the normal ship scanner and narrowing focus. Warped back and forth getting closer and closer. 5. Got to within 50,000,000 km (1/3 of an AU) which should put the indy on the middle 1/3 of the 1AU vertical scan range, worst case if I'm directly below it. 6. Dropped 3 3AU scan probes. Scanned once, no sig. Scanned twice, no sig, scanned 3x no signature. I dropped them in a swath with a mwd on to give them a little spread.
I think scan probes are broken with the vertical thing. It's much smaller than 1AU.
I have screen shots...
I successfully located the ship with probes when I got within 25m km. so the actual vertical range is under 100m km...

Yes, Ive had the same problems since the Bloodlines patches. Did CCP leave something out of patch notes? Ive trianed scanning multiples times with 3 probes at one spot for ships within 50mil km and been successful no times. I havent done a controlled test, but i have been hitting my scanner with 1 sec left and the same named ship was still within 50mil km.

Oh and did farjung ever release a thread about observarotor(sp?) probe use?

I didn't actually. To be honest, I'm sure that there are lots of people now who would be better equipped to do so, I've not really been practicing with them all that much recently to get the optimal method down. Just a question of them deciding to actually do so heh. When I start using probes a lot again then I'll try and ensure I've got the best method worked out, and post it.

Of course the bit I enjoy is using an expendable frigate to make multiple safe spots out of the plane of systems and watching you ratty types waste probes (and therefore money) trying to track me.

I've been trying out scan probes (Currently can't use observators yet) and having great fun actually doing something mildly useful during my corp's operations.
Several people have been telling me that they either have trouble using scan probes on Safe Spots that are not on the vertical plane. (i.e. a mission Bookmark that may be above or below the rest of the stellar items in system like planets and asteroid belts).
Can anyone with more knowledge confirm with a yes/no answer whether probes work in 3D ? Does the scanner work in 3D ?
 Thanks. |

The scanner works in 3D - the narrow beams are highly directional and you can aim them in any direction you can aim the camera.
After the story above, where the guy was almost on top of the target, I'm beginning to think that probes are not using a 360 degree sweep - I'm thinking that maybe they have a conical emission to the sides ; you could drop a 3 AU probe 100 M above the target and miss it because it was outside of the sweep radius.
I could just be talking nonsense though! You'd have to actually try this out....
