Its now been a little over 3 weeks since I started scanning moons and 2 weeks since I set up my first POS and just a few days since I started off on some reactions.
If your thinking of trying out POS then the follow may help or hinder (don't forget I am still learning).
The Costs. To run a large POS for a week is between 60-70mil but seems to be increasing as isotopes are getting more expensive. Of course you can mine the ice but a large control tower will need around 300 lumps of Ice/Week. This should reduce your running costs to a mere 10-20mil/week.
Moon Scanning.
I have scanned 1000 or more moons in Empire space. I made the mistake of building a POS near the first half decent moon I could find. Sadly I could find no supporting moons in the small region I had set the pos up in. I then moved regions and found a better complimentary set of moons within a jump of each other.
This is where I intend to operate from. The first POS will be taken down and moved.
Use a hauler fitted with a Probe launcher and use the cheap probes. So long as you don't crash, dock, leave system, your results will come in. Just point at the moon and launch.
Moon Canning seems to be getting more and more common. This is where someone scans a moon and anchors a can to prevent you from erecting a POS. Make a note of this moon and scan it, I am told CCP are working on something to fix this, when they do, get in quick.
Caution. Some people are setting their POS to shoot anyone near their POS. Warp to the planet and use the normal scanner on max range and 360 degree. Look for control tower's and other POS structures. If you see them then take care, cos they may shoot you. You may also want to consider if its worthwhile scanning the system knowing that the better moon/s have been taken.
Central Store. I found that it helped creating a central store in a 0.5 system just outside the "danger" zone and I was also able to get a base in the system with the POS's and bookmark it. Corp members not willing to visit the pos area can at least haul to/from the central store.
Time/Planning. Running a POS/POS's takes a lot of time. Now I am running reactions I have to time it right so I can harvest/switch/turn off reactions when I/Corp members are going to be on-line. Running reactions means you got to supply much more Ozone and Water.
Help. I have found the channel POS Funtime a great help, all the people in their are willing to help and share their experiences. Its also a good place to buy/sell/trade. Had it not been for them I would have made a lot more mistakes. (Thanks Guys)
Profits. I not seen any profit as yet, give me a month and I will let you know. But i have had some fun and some satisfaction in getting this far.
I hope others will add to this post, and I hope CCP will maybe give us a bit of loving with regards to Moon Canning, Fuel Usage, and Reaction times.
