Back in the day, I loved PTO 2 on the SNES. It was an insanely detailed, slow-paced WW2 Pacific Theater simulation-type strategy game (with horrible graphics). There was so much micro-managing of the finest details that it rose above its faults to be one of the most elegant war-based games I've ever played.
Anyone have some contemporary suggestions for games like this? |

It was a Koei game. I miss good Koei games. I am a huge fan of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, but the newest one is supposedly terrible (and is more of an RTS, which I don't care for).
I've not found any recent simulation-type strategy games like it in the past several years. I would love to hear about them too. Community Representative GÇ+ EVE Illuminati GÇ+ Fiction Adept

The Europa Universalis series might be worth checking out. "It's no use crying over spilt milk, because all the forces of the universe were bent on spilling it." ~William Maugham |

If you like the old-style wargames with hexagons and counters on a map, check the Matrix Games catalog. Some excellent hardcore wargames for the serious grognard. (For example, War in the Pacific and Uncommon Valor that pussnheels mentioned). All genres-- ancient, Napoleonic, WWII, naval, modern, fantasy, sci-fi. Matrix publishes games by a variety of game developers, so there's some less-hardcore stuff in there as well. In the sci-fi genre, AI Wars gets great reviews from players. I usually check out the wargamer.com forums to see what people are recommending. |
