I'm a new player - about 1.5 months in.
I was doing a level 2 NPC mission in 0.8 space when I was attacked by another player. After a very long batte, I was killed.
CONCORD never showed up. Am I wrong to think that I can do simple missions in high-sec space at this point?
Does high-sec space mean nothing? Does CONCORD mean nothing?
So, I am a like a level 5 player in a world where level 80 players can kill you any time, any place, without consequence or reason to hesitate - is that right?
Sorry, what makes this worth playing? |

This kill?
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=17988965
I don't see any reason to believe this was a gank. There's no way a Slasher will do 43,188 damage in the time it takes for CONCORD to show up (which would be in seconds, at best). If CONCORD didn't show up, it means Ansgarius had kill rights on you for some reason. Whether this is because you stole from him or a corpmate, he was able to shoot you without fear of CONCORD showing up, and with your loadout, you wouldn't have been able to hit him very well (if at all) aside from maybe your drones (and missiles). Do I need to stop playing Eve Online, but just raise my skills and do nothing else, until I can fit all Tech 2 gear? |

No.
Better to figure out what you'd done which would allow him to shoot you without getting CONCORD'd.
1) You took something from a can that belonged to him/his corp. 2) Your corp is at war with his corp.
(there are probably others I'm forgetting at the moment)
Once you figure that part out, you can avoid doing it again in the future, and this sort of thing won't happen.
Likely what DID happen is that he scanned down your mission, warped in, looted something of yours, becoming red/flashy so you could shoot at him. IF you did shoot at him at that point (because he stole from you), he would be free to engage you without fear of retribution. Even if you didn't, and instead "stole your stuff back", you'd then have become flashy to him, which would have also allowed him to engage you without fear of retribution.
Remember, once someone steals something from you, the game considers it theirs. Stealing it back is just as bad, as far as the game is concerned, as them originally stealing it from you.
To respond to your final question, "What makes this worth playing?" well, in the end, it's turning the tables on a pilot like this. Lulling them into a false sense of security, and then springing your own trap on them. Generally speaking, they like to prey on the weak and the new, and will run from a real fight. (Generally, though, NOT all the time.) The feeling you get when you're the one left with a ship at the end, trust me, that's a great feeling. :) "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Nope, you just need to understand the aggression rules.
Did he steal from you (loot a wreck)? If so, he would have turned red. If you then shot him that would give him the rights to retaliate without Concord response. (This is most likely what happened) Is his corp at war with yours?
p.s. A Tech 2 fitted PvE ship would have just resulted in a more expensive lossmail.
Edit: Apparently I'm too slow. |

It's one of 2 things the less likely a war dec, or a can flipper/loot thief and you retaliated and gave him the right to defend himself. This is usually a trick as inexperienced pilots will be killed by far mor experienced pvpers when that happens your best bet is let them loot they will get bored and ignore you. |

There would have to be a reason CONCORD did not show up. Perhaps he stole from one of your wrecks, turning him red in your overview... then you shot at him thinking he was shooting at you. This would let him shoot you back.
Perhaps he put out a can that you thought was yours, and you took from it. Allowing him to shoot you.
There are lots of tricks that more experienced players use to get noobs to mess up. The key is to know the tricks and not fall for them.

Thank you for the responses and the explanation.
I would guess he opened a wreck and tricked me into attacking, as I did not understand the rules.
I was also given the suggestion to "abandon all wrecks" as another way to prevent this situation. |

That's one option. The other option is to just ignore any player that warps into your mission. Don't shoot him, don't loot yellow wrecks or cans and they won't be able to do anything without getting concorded.
Also, consider moving to a quieter area. You're 1 jump from a trade hub in a system that gets ~ 10000 jumps and 21 ship kills a day. |

That's the likeliest scenario.
I meant what I said, though, about turning the tables on your attacker. ;)
Oh, and lest I forget, I would seriously suggest also convoing the pilot which blew you up and ask what happened. Sure, you'll get the occasional asshat who'll laugh at you, but more often than not, the other pilot will be more than willing to actually help you out and discuss what happened. Don't let all the stories about Eve Online fool you, there's actually a LOT of helpful people in this game, even if most of them take your ship/pod, first.
Good luck in New Eden, and if you ever feel like learning some PVP, feel free to look up Red vs Blue, Eve University, or any of the other great PVP institutions.

All of the other posters are correct in their advice, and for future reference with regards to CONCORD; they provide punishment *not* protection. The difference is very important, so take this into account when assessing your risk of being suicide ganked (although only ships worth several hundred million ISK or more are usually suicided in high sec). |

No one commented on the fit?? OP: That hurricane was suffering anyway, he did you a favor. Do NOT mix guns on a ship, NEVER, unless you know really well what you're doing. Fit either autocannons or artillery and don't put small and mediums, it's a battlecruiser, so fit medium guns. If you used small ones because you didn't have enough powergrid or CPU, then take the launchers off, you'll be doing better without them but with a full rack of identical guns and ammos than anything you would ever achieve with that fit. You have a drone bay on that cane, so give her a few drones to get rid of the frigates instead of using small guns. The capacitor power relays in your lows, they're reducing your shield booster effectiveness, so you're shooting yourself in the foot. If you need more cap, replace the web with a cap booster or fit some Capacitor Control Circuit rigs and save the slots for more gyrostabs. You seriously need to work on your support skills if you have to use fitting mods and compromise gun sizes to make it fit, you're not ready to fly a battlecruiser. Have a read here if you don't know where to start, this will provide you with a solid base to fit ships. "haiku are easy, But sometimes they don't make sense, Refrigerator." |

Yep most likely reason is one of: 1) He stole from one of your wrecks, turned red flashy, you shot him. So he could shoot you back ("defend himself") without CONCORD intervening. 2) He warped into your mission while you were looting and dropped a can of his own, which you scooped up thinking it was loot from your mission, and that gave him permission to shoot you (since you unwittingly became a "thief")
Best advice to prevent it happening again, is to never ever shoot another player unless you know what you're doing, and never ever loot from a yellow wreck or container. As long as you don't do either of those, anyone who attacks you will get killed by CONCORD, hopefully (but not guaranteed) before you blow up.
IMO the fit is OK for a newbie doing level 2 missions. Of course it sucks and will need changing when you move on up. But for now, it will get the job done just fine. |

- He may be taking bad habits in fittings that will cause him more expensive losses in the future.
- He's in a one-man corp, and seems to play alone, so explaining why his fit is terribad may be more helpful than encouraging him to continue that way.
But whatever floats your boat. "haiku are easy, But sometimes they don't make sense, Refrigerator." |

OP, I'm a n00b too, under 3 months and this happened to me as well. From what I've learned everything above is great advice. I've followed most of it. Let me add one thing. Convo whoever killed you. Seriously, with the right attitude, they will tell you what you did wrong and offer suggestions. The couple times I lost a ship, I bucked-up and asked 'How did you get me? I want to learn'. So far, I've learned the characters & environment in EVE can be harsh, but players are generally good natured people. EvE, it's all about tear managment. |

A NORMAL cruiser will get the same job done for less ISK in a level 2. Hell, a properly fitted destroyer can take level 2 missions.
That fit made me wash my eyes with bleech. I'm totally with Sin Pew on this one.

To many people exactly what happened to you is what makes this game worth playing.
To many others defending you against this sort of thing is what makes this game worth playing (obv not in high-sec that's CONCORD's job)
Remember Eve is a pvp game & even in high-sec you are never safe. But if you understand aggression mechanics you are 'safer'
Ofc then there is gankers but hey with a fit like that you are not going to experience them |

Always remember this: All the skill points and awesome modules and gear and big or advanced ships in the world won't mean anything if you still don't know how to fight properly and understand the key mechanics of combat and proper fitting for the right situation.
Strive to learn these things while the skill timer ticks, you'll make the best use of your time this way and it'll keep things from being a bore while you wait. If you already read about it then put it into practice until you're goo with it :D The Drake is a Lie |
