Whats up with the Pay to Play, I know lots of sweet games that doens't make you pay to play their games. I mean i already spent $40 on this why must I pay more?

Because there's a market that will sustain 'pay-to-play', atleast for now.

Yea, but why must they charge so much? I mean they'd still make bundles of money with 5000 players a day at $2-5 a month

Standard price for all games is $10 to 13 a month.
Paying programmers, PR people, and paying for bandwidth and server upgrades is expensive. Try and find anyone that will provide any server for 2-5 bucks a month.

Thats why most business have private servers.. To lower the price to just maintince on the servers and connection.

EVE does have private servers. Your 12 bucks a month gets tech support (non-GM form), content, pays the developers to quash bugs, server maintanance, and a bunch of other stuff.
It basically allows CCP to go on tweaking EVE instead of making a new game.

Who you calling a junior? Junior, the online gaming games that I play Continues to upgrade their games, gives us servers, fast tech support, Heres a prime example, Battle Field 1942 has 100's of servers, and don't make you pay to play. So I'm not trying to start a fight.. Just Saying i really dont' see the need to pay. I mean I payed $40 and it don't even have single player, incase i don't have enough time to play a whole bunch during a certain month

Without even going into detail, Battlefield 1942 does not support 6k players in the same game at once. 'nuff said.

You REALLY have no idea what you are talking about, or even playing for that matter. If you did, you would know that BF 1942 and games like it are not anything remotly close to EVE. Do some research before buying next time.
Krylon Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.

People charge for a lot of online games per month. It pays for a hell of a lot.
Normal offline game, you spent ú30 or so on, you get a patch or 2 upgrading or correcting things, and thats it. No more support than that.
A good online game starts off ok, then grows over time. The monthly fee pays for servers, bandwidth, development, etc. Oh, and it pays for quality too. You know why? Because the people who own the company want to make a profit. Not just in the run up to Christmas, but for years. So they keep enhancing the game, bringing new stuff in etc.
You get a successful game like Everquest (about 100,000 subscribers) or ultima online (been going longer than everquest), and they can make money. The poorer games simply don't survive long, or lose a lot of development support.
This game has great potential - I expect to be still playing it in a couple of years time.

Please note that with games such as Battlefield 1942, those many hundreds of servers are neither maintained nor paid for by the game company. Most of them are run by individuals, and many others are run by companies such as SpeakEasy as a form of advertisement.
For massively multiplayer online games, all the server hardware, maintenance, bandwidth, and associated personnel costs are handled by the game company, thereby forcing them to charge a monthly fee for it be continue to be a viable business.
Hope that answers your question. --------------------

Why are youi guys jumping down this dudse throat? Just explain, rather than cut him down.
Battlefielddoes have many servers that are free, this is true, but somebody is paying for those servers, either a GSP or a clan.
MMORPGs are different in that (in this case) everyone is on the same server, and the environment is constantly updating, as are the systems within the game. But mostly it's because there's thousands of people hitting just one companies bandwidth.
If *all* bf1942 games were hosted by one company, you'd have to pay them too. .

Wow, like many people who already stated in this topic, you have absolutely no freaking idea what you are talking about. D00d seriously do some research before saying ridiculous crap like that.

Actually EA (Electronic Arts) does infact supply around 100 Battlefield 1942 servers for its community around the world. Of course there are other servers payed for my individuals, clans, ISPs etc. I know because I play BF1942 in a league clan.
If you compare EVE and other MMORPG games who pay to play, and Blizzard's Diablo 2 which on average has around 500,000 players who dont pay a dime...
I dont mind pay 13$ a month for this game, so long as there is continual support and updates etc etc, which Im sure there will be!
Im looking forward to seeing some roleplay when they have fixed all the bugs :S
