Hello, I have a question about strip miners, I hope this is the right place for it.
I have just bought my first mining barge (procurer) and have tries to equip a strip miner 1 to it. It equips ok, but I cannot seem to use it. Is there another skill you need to actually fire the thing?
I thought the mining barges were made for the thing?

check the skill requirements on the module itself.

might be stupid answer but you did buy the strip miner and not the ice miner right? Ice miner takes a different skill.
I am sure you did just wanted to make sure.

First of all, if you don't have the correct skills to use a module, you cannot fit it. As Ice Miners require Ice refining skill and he doesn't have it, he's unable to install the module.
The strip miners range is 15km, so you need to be within that range to activate it and actually have a 'roid targeted :D Just a small tip, the small barge sucks, better train up for medium barge to use 2 strip miners. With my current skills & ships (Osprey (Cruiser 4) & Apoc (Mining 5, Astrogeo 5)) they actually beat in yield both small and medium barge.

Just thought I'd correct you ... No matter the level of skill last time I checked, the Osprey can not out mine a Retriever  .
All relevant skills to level 5...
Osprey with 3 Miner II's = 562.5m3 / minute
Retriever with 2 Strip I's = 646.875m3 / minute
Even if you set up an Osprey with 3 MDCM II's with Veld crystals (I don't even know if this is possible) you get = 609.375m3 / minute.

i agree retriever n above r simply uber.
but take note that MDCM II can only install Mercoxit cyrstal only (refer to item description), i.e. it belongs to deep core mining only.

sorry there m8. the MDCM I is the one that can only take mercoxit crystals. the MDCM II is taking any crystal :)

I currently use a Ferox equipped with 5 miner II, is it worth getting a medium barge with a couple of Strip Miner 1's???
Higher or lower yield with a barge?

it depends where u do your mining.
in high sec empire, u r better off using a medium barge, since no one can steal ore from u.
and in low sec, unless u hv corp members protect u, its sensible to use whatever ship that can tank n fight off npc rats while mining.
n in 0.0, i dunno , never done that b4.

Barge is the bomb for mining no matter where you go. The only exception may be for mercoxit because I don't believe that there are any barges or crystals capable of mining the ore.
An Osprey may have a chance at fighting off enimies in 0.4, but anything much below that you're better off just running.
In 0.4 a large barge usually has enough drone capacity when combined with heavy drones to fend off rats of less than 40K bounty. Any more than that, and you'd better be a genius working the shields on that barge. It's usually just better to run.
