Originally by: Dezzereth For about 10 Weeks now I visit the forums on a regular basis. Before that I only have taken a quick glance at them then and when. Slowly I wish I had never started to read them.
Lots of people complain about feature"x" others about "y" and all agree to disa... no, ..... to whine. Actually there ARE constructive and intelligent posts among all the rubbish - ironically they are from those people the average gamer sees as "bad" people for whatever reason. Its long time PVPlers, most often pirates, that seem to have a deep knowledge and understanding of the basic game mechanics, which is about combat. EVE is a combat game, PVP oriented (at least it was). The other options are/were there to supplement the player combat oriented activity, thereby giving also the noncombat type of player a niche, and a chance to enjoy the game.
Now of course there are also PVPlers whining about diverse stuff like "OMFG, my leet laz0rs were NERFFEEHHHD!!" or "I can't even hit a planet with my guns, WTF?", and things like that. But the most unconstructive come from people who feel they are wronged by CCP, the game mechanics, other players, or whatever/whoever they want to blame their misfortune on. It seems they never even TRY to think THEY might have done something wrong - the typical "I CAN'T be wrong, so the others must be" attitude I really hate about humans.
I also saw personal attacks at CCP staff, which were at the very edge (and beyond) of civilized communication. If you cant handle the stress of interacting with the community and the developers of a mmorpg then take your pills and hit "unsubcribe", easy as that. This flames and pseudofunny jokes at the direction of CCP when they comment on something (also on the testserver) really only proves that those people should abstain from voicing his/her opinion at all. Yes, some comments of CCP's staff may seem to be childish or whatever, but they are people like we all, who need to vent a bit then and when too, and if this whole thing gets too serious I doubt they'd continue to develop EVE further, because im sure they do this for fun too, not to get OMGWTFzor rich. If you think they are wrong or messing something up, talk to them like YOU want to be..... erm, ok, lets say this in an other way: If you think they are messing up something tell them in a manner which doesn't make you appear like you got your raising and education in the jungles of Madagascar.
Back to EVE. EVE is a very complex game in its structure and even IF its combat oriented it will never get CS in space, like some try to point out. I think nobody (who knows those) would think of Homeworld or Starfleet Command to be similar to CS. And the things that differentiates EVE from the strategy games I mentioned is the fact that there a "bit" more than just 8 players simultaneously in-game and that there are a "bit" more options in EVE. Why do I take this comparison? Because EVE is slowly sliding toward the fate of "whining on forums, no content in game", and the funny thing is that CCP isn't even the main responsible for that. Why?. Lots of whines, things get changed, then more whiney because of new and old appearing bugs, which come with every patch, because its impossible to forsee all possible holes in a complex game like this.
EVE is still the most intelligent MMORPG out in the web, mainly because the posssiblities you have at your disposal, but the really strong side of EVE (as I often pointed out in discussions) is the fact that its a "fringe game". It lives from the fact that the gamemechanics and gameuniverse were very different from other games (not PVE based), and I think we all (or at least most) agree they didnt get their awards for nothing - it must have been a hell lot of a work to put this baby together.
So to come to a conclusion before the space runs out (CCP, could we get a raise in max. chars per posting?): EVE currently has lots of smaller and bigger problems, but many come from the fact that there seems to be a lack of vision (although I know there is, but it seems like there is none) and too much listening to what is mistakenly taken as the "general populance of eve". This all is leading toward EVE getting more in line of "mainstream mmorpgs", and that wont work. It's the same with Nine Inch Nails atm, the more mainstream the music gets the more dull and boring it is.
To CCP: Keep EVE special, you did a wonderful job sofar, but the whole thing seems to stall, and to me and to some others it seems like you are "getting behind things". Also most people dont even read the forums, because they rather like to enjoy the game - keep that in mind pls. To the kind of forum-poster I mentioned above: Please, try to show less typical human behaviour in your posts, and show a bit more atypical, like trying to understand the others point of view, and keeping a more civilized language.
