yeah, the 'rookie ship' equivalent of infantry gear would be Militia gear: the weapons of which can be still lethal but not nearly as capable as higher level gear, especially in the dropsuit department because the suit's onboard PG and CPU is not as capable as the higher tier suits.
Standard type gear would then be Tier 1
The next level, Advanced would be analogous to Tier 2.
Prototype would be analogous to Tier 3.
Militia gear on the whole is easily replacable and cheap, your rookie suits are preset loads of militia gear that never really run out, and you can always buy those militia level weapons and gear for other suit loads - its warfare on a budget with militia stuff, but good for rookies.
everything else beyond the starting fits gets lost when you get killed, so the average groundpounder has to have a handy iventory of dropsuits, weapons, vehicles, suit modules and other specialist equipment. this gets expensive especially if you tend to die a lot.
i'm 43 in real life, my reflexes are not nearly as fast as they used to be and certainly not as fast as some of these youngsters playing shooters nowadays. i make up for in aim, but still i have gotten up to about a 1:1 ratio of deaths to kills on most days, some days worse and some days better, but thats life
But lets say i play 5 matches in the time I have and die about 5 times each, thats 25 times with a modest loadout costing me around 30,000 ISK a loadout (thats using standard and cheapo stuff) it gets expensive pretty fast. and all that gear may have to come from somewhere eventually.
I've probably left about 300+ pairs of smoking boots and mangled corpses on the field thus far, on this build, my lifetime is much higher but the counter usually gets reset wih each wipe, lol.
we lose clone bodies at rates that capsuleers shudder about, a clone infantryman's body is a walking weapon that is still basically disposable.
