Quote: There was not a single reported slaying, stabbing, shooting or knifing in any of the five boroughs on Monday, according to the New York Police Department.
"It is unusual in a city of 8 million people, but we never read that much into one day," said Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne, who said it was the "first time in memory" that the city had had such a lull in violent crime.
The violence-free stretch spanned 36 hours, starting Sunday evening when a man was shot in the head and lasted until Tuesday morning with another shooting, police said.

You have to read BBC News for the full story. "But overall there has been a 3% rise in crime, which includes things like smartphone theft." It wasn't that there weren't any shootings, stabbings or beatings, it was just that people didn't have phones to report them.

That is weird, you would think, in a city of that many people, where only the criminals are armed, that it would be a breeding ground for murder. |

Oh god, no. Lots of cities go a day without a murder. It's of course easier with smaller populations, though.
Another city in the same population range as NYC is Seoul, South Korea, with ~10 million, and it's renowned as being one of the safest cities in the world due to its low homicide and crime rates. It goes a day without a murder frequently.
Not hating. I think part of the mystique of NYC is how rough it is. "It's no use crying over spilt milk, because all the forces of the universe were bent on spilling it." ~William Maugham |

I actually can't recall ever seeing an obese murderer. Evil people all seem to be skinny or in good shape no matter where they live. Perhaps fast food chains actually have our best interests in mind.
But yes, probably unfair to generalize about all of the US. "It's no use crying over spilt milk, because all the forces of the universe were bent on spilling it." ~William Maugham |

Hmmm this left me thinking ... Though completely rambling, there MIGHT be a correlation in selfish morbid satisfaction of needs (overeating for instance) and a decrease in violence, since you are pleasing yourself , orally.
Of course, it might be a good groundwork to start looking for correlations between obesity and sheer displays of violence and aggression.
Quick googling provides clues to a high aggression rate and overeating and a study between obesity and aggression in schools and bullying
But I believe that all of this tends to point out in a positive way my small hypotheis, I might theorize, that current generations are more violent and tend to vent anger differently (social media perhaps? bullying, trolling, passive aggressive behavior) than outright manslaying.
Perhaps outright violent people that go kill others still fail to "channel" aggressiveness on more or less socially accepted forms of doing it ...
hmmm ... more googling just points out that obesity and aggression correlate on bullying studies. But, we need to look forward and beyond.
Perhaps the governments KNOW people that satiate basic desires, though still aggressive, are less prone to show the outbursts in certain ways, hence fast food eh?
/tinfoil hat off
Or simply .... we are more aggressive now due to the types of food we eat and our modern habits?
Food for thought, there must be a TED talk around and obscure thesis on the subject ... Inner Sayings of BrujoLoco: http://eve-files.com/sig/brujoloco |
