Hello fellow pilots,
I need some help from people who are familiar with and ideally play eve with a laptop running the intel HD4000 graphics chip.
I'm looking to get a new laptop that can play eve reasonably well, medium settings in small gang (10-15 pilots) pvp, missions and so on.
Current front runners are:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-V3-571G-15-6-inch-Laptop/dp/tech-data/B009R15FCQ/ref=de_a_smtd Graphics Device - nVidia GeForce GT 630M CPU: Intel Core i5 3210M 2.5 GHz
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=n00i1512&model_id=inspiron-15z-5523&c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1& Intel-« HD Graphics 4000 3rd Generation Intel-« CoreGäó i5-3317U processor (3M Cache, up to 2.6 GHz)
I've heard pretty good things about the 4000HD, but can anyone give me some feedback based on personal experience on how it handles eve at different settings? It'd be very much appreciated.

Use Intel graphics, be sorry.....
I have a M660 in my Asus Laptop, it will run 2 clients at max settings without an issue. Can't say how the 630 is going to do, but I assume it would handle a single account easily enough.

Go with a GF or Radeon Vid card, no on chip stuff. Also get at least 4 GB memory, 2 clents easy. |

Why on earth would you buy a laptop for EVE?
It's going to cost significantly more than a significantly better Desktop, If it breaks (which is much more likely than with a desktop because the build quality of pretty much all laptops is absolute shite), you can't really fix it so enjoy your shipping and manufacturer fees, you have a tiny little screen. You also cannot upgrade it, at least not with any reasonable ease, so it has a finite lifetime, compared to a desktop which is essentially modular.
The only reason i can think of is that you want to be mobile... but that would require a Satellite Internet connection, and playing EVE on Wireless is such a ridiculously bad idea i can't even comprehend it fully. You're going to drop out and lose ships constantly, not to mention being EXTREMELY laggy. And that's not even accounting for the multitude of security issues with Wireless.
I suppose... if you want to AFK Mine it might be good though..? Just do yourself a favor and get a real PC. |

Well I have a desktop PC which is great for eve, SSD and 2 24" full HD screens so I can run two clients on max next to each other which is fantastic.
I want a laptop because due to family and other commitments I tend to go away over holidays and other times. I cant really set up a full gaming PC on the inlaws dining room table at Christmas, but I can find space for a laptop and a mouse. |

Either will do fine. Well from exp with the HD series at least, it does really well for me. Have a nvidia on the desktop, not sure about it on the laptop, but being fond of nvidia I'll say it'd do fine. I'd probably go with the slightly better cpu in EVE's case. run 4GB SDRAM or better.

Satellite? Really?? What is this 1998? 4G is clean, low latency high-speed if going wireless. Even 3G is better than satellite. Not to mention it not being an easy thing to carry your satellite equipment around with you when you go someplace, hah when any cell worth a damn has hotspot or tether support.

Relatively recent previous threads touching on the issue to some degree:
1. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=158787 2. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=156014 3. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=152790
The most important question is WHY do you feel you need to play EVE on the CPU-integrated-GPU only ? Is it the total power usage, is it the total machine cost, or is it something else ? Maybe a combination of those ? There might be better alternatives from any of those viewpoints to running just the HD4000 inside the CPU, but we need to know your reasoning about it, what's important to you first and foremost. Or the HD4000 might be sufficient for you. We don't know unless you give us more feedback.
Where are you ok to order from, any site that delivers in the UK or just some specific ones ? How large/small or light/heavy would you prefer the machine to be ? Would it need to be ultramobile, or work more like a desktop replacement that needs to be somewhat mobile ? What's more important to you, battery life or FPS ? What's your total budget ?
You know, things like that. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/User:Akita_T T2 BPO poll: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=114789 Buying this: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=147098 |
