I've never been able to figure this out, and I've never found a thread dealing with this issue before, but I was wondering what happens when an agent offers me a tribute (other than a loss in loyalty points)? Is there a true benefit to it or should I hang on to those points?

If you payed attention, their basicly giving you something for free, which is described in the agreement. Reading is good mmmkay?

Umm . . . .
I've read these messages a million times - no mention of an item or standing increase, just that I'm 'being offered a tribute.' What I would like to know (and if you had read my post) is what does a 'Tribute' mean for a character in the game? Is this a bug (ie, should something else be appearing in the message?)

Could you post the full offer text, including the bit at the bottom about requirements and offered items? Or better, a screenshot?
Either there's a bug, or you have trouble reading english text. I'd bet on the latter

Every time I have gotten this offer, it has been an offer of some trade goods for the LP. it's a way to clear out the LP balance

Daolin - no issues with proper English - I'd like to think I have a good grasp on the language after reading some of the posts in the forum sections!
If I am offered another tribute I'll post the actual message here. I have checked my 'Items' when such an offer is made and I do not receive any trade goods - nothing new appears in other stations either. As for the text itself there is absolutely NO mention of specific goods - just that a 'Tribute' is to be offered. The message is very short; and as one can imagine, not too informative.
As I see it now there is no benefit to the 'Tribute' other than a loss in Loyalty points (no trade goods awarded, or no increase in standings towards agents, corporations or government factions).

See, if you had given that info right at the start of the thread, I could have replied that the offer usually gives trade goods, and getting nothing at all is probably a bug.
If you don't post these details, you force the forum users to either guess or inquire about these details. We can't read minds, or look at your screen

Look in your journal. Go into the offers folder and you'll find offer details for the tribute.
The tribute is just a way to suck LP's from you without asking for other items. Nothing more.

And in rare occasions the tribute can actually offer something worth while... like a nexus chip.
