yet another set-up thread :( sorry i finally went back to killin pirates this evening (first time since patch) Im juggling my set up but not really hitting it right, so im looking for suggestions please.
Im using 1x heavy beam, 1 x gauss 250mm proto and a dual 125mm gauss proto (the 250mm range is 29k now !)
i have a med shield boost and armor boost with a MWD and v-m15 shield
2 x corp react mgr's and a baic tracking enhancer.
im doing 40k cruiser pirates and with a range of about 21k im getting 50-70 hits from my 250mm. the problem is the ones that get close, within 10k or so - im takin an ass kicking then.
with the mwd im losing 50% shield and 25% powercore and the hybrids eat nrg :)
maybe my tactics are wrong - i have tried firing at one at a time and ive also tried firing 1 wep at each locked target.
what set-ups are currently working for everyone else - my spawn at the moment is usually 1xannihalator, 1xascriber and 2-4 terrorists all coming at once :).

I have the same problem. But get rid of the MWD and put in 2 cold gas arc jets. I fly my cruiser at 475m/s right now and can always stay at 16-21k or more from my targets and nail them with my Railgun.
MWD has too much of a shield hit and hard to control in battles like that. I would switch to Cold Gas for your fights. They do the trick.

who's dropping arc jets ?? i use the mwd to get outta trouble only :) but you are right that 50% shield loss is extreme.

i got good setup
3 x 250mm (standard) 1 x heavy neutron 1 x arblast launcher 1 x standard launcher
i x med shield 1 x ab (cold gas) 1 x capacitor i x shield ext
3 x powercore ( 1x 10% power - 2 x 5%power) 1 x mag field
the 250mm has good range 22km - 10km the blaster kicks in 10km and less
its a really good combo i use - try it out
ps the powercores and capacitor unit make cap recharge rate much better the magnetic field increases damage and firing rate of guns

all about speed......
the only thing that killed me when fighting NCP's is getting too close.
get to YOUR optimal range for guns and stay there.
why are you mixing up guns ? i run 2 x 250mm and they do the job fine. my distance to pirates is determined by these guns and there range.
also note when fighting NCP's you set the pace and tactics..... No need for multy guns and ranges and what not.
Set up for Moa.. JUST FOR NCP
Hi SLot 3x250mm (dependant of skills and lo slot mods if you have the power core) Poss smartbomb to deal with missles
Med SLot Arc's or normal AB's (atleast 2 to be able to maintain optimal distance to pirates) Shield booster poss warp stabaliser
Lo Slot Power core thingys giving 5% boost to power core amonghst other things.
use up spare slots as needed. most imporant to understand... fighting NCP is totaly different to PvP
also good advise not to hunt on your own. only takes the missis banging in yer ear and them 40k rats that was 19km away are on your arse all of a sudden. once they got you close is real real hard to get away
wanna tell us where them 40k rats are ?

Mixing up gun ranges does matter post-patch, even for NPC pirate hunting (20k+ pirates).
You may warp into the middle of 2+ of high end pirates (20k+) and get stasis webified+warp jammed. By the time you get to optimal range with big guns (assuming u make it), u would have taken a beaten already
I use 2 x Heavy Mod Beams (med-long range) and 2 x Medium Mod Beams (short-med range). The Heavy Mod Beams do 100+ dmg 10-12k (using multi m) The Medium Mod Beams do 80-100 on avg <5km (also multi-m). With fairly good tracking speed on the medium mod beams, I can tear through 3 or more 20k+ pirates pretty quickly even at close range if I am unfortunate enough to warp into the middle of them.
I use 2 x LIF boosters (base 30% to max speed) and no shield penalty to keep distance and a medium neutron shield booster (rarely used).
Low slots are filled with heatsinks and power diagnostics.
Set-up works pretty well and have never had to waste missiles on the NPC pirates, even when fighting 3x20k + 4x8k at the same time.

Switch those ABs and MWDs to shield hardeners and there is no way you can loose your ship, even if you take on groups with 50k pirates.

I use 4 Anode Neutrons, 1 rare Medium Shield booster, 1 rare Thermal Shield, 2 LiF boosters, 3 Power Diags, and one Gauss Field Balancer II.
Your 425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun perfectly strikes some nublar, wrecking for 1155.0 damage. |

yaaaar ?!! lol
thanks guys , all useful stuff. i quite often get warped into the middle of em and i have come to within 2% of losing the moa because of webifying they do. hence the mwd ive fitted but im gonna swap it for normal abs now :) i have some hardeners in my hanger (kinetic,thermal and explosive i think, 3 of em anyways) i might give them a go 2 at a time with shield boost and without boost. My 250 gauss's do rubbish damage even with gunnery lvl5 and lvl4 rapid fire and movement thingy lvl3 (in fact i have 14 gunnery skills, none below 3 and mostly 4's), i was getting good hits before patch. Same with beams and projectiles. I think ill work on defence and speed and keep trying wep set up out :)
p.s. the 40k pirates are in 0 sec in venal, or at least thats where im finding em :) but they are the webifyer bastids :)

this warping into middle of rats situation. you still get the several seconds grace where they cannot target you.
if you go with the speed... then you will have plenty of time to put ample distance between you and the rats, befor they can get a lock.
taking on multy rats as close distance is a sure fire way to end up dead.
long range guns and speed to control distance. really is the best way to hunt rats.

The problem with the several seconds grace time is that it usually vanishes due to lag. Anyway
For mob hunting I use 2 x 250mm compressed 2 x Anode Neutrons 1 x rare H-50 1 x small plasma bomb type thingy (take care of incomming missiles)
1 x Cold Gas Arc 1 x rare med shield booster 1 x rare themal hardener 1 x em hardener
3 x Reactor Control Unit 1 1 x Photonic CPU thingy
Seems to work nicley as my shield last for ever. =========================================

Use COLD-GAS AB as they are much better then normal After Burns and got no bad buff's, and still u can ger the job done reaching far gates or stations. U can find those COLD-GAS AB by 20k to 40 pirates or go out in Outer Ring CLoud and hunt some cruiser. Amy.

I use the following load out and can easily solo most pirates:
Hi-Slots 2xHeavy Beam Lasers with Radio/Gamm/MulitFreq 2xHeavy Pulse Lasers with same (depends on range) 2xA3 Assault Launchers with Rockets/Light Missiles
Mid-Slots 1xLarge Shield Booster 2xVarious Wards (depends on pirate damage) 1xMWD (offline!)
Low-Slots 2xPower Diagnostics 1 2xStamped Heat Sink
At long range (20-30km) i can usually do 100+ damage per Beam laser & 75(ish) with pulse. I use the rockets/missiles to shoot out the pirates' missiles by targetting the pirate that has shot - they work better than defenders do atm.
The MWD MUST be offline until you need it. I only ever use it if i get in trouble. With the above setup i can easily solo Depredators on a spawn loop without running out of cap.
With MWD offline, my shields stay at 100% (1.4k+ depending on add-ons) as does my cap (1.3k).
p.s. if anyone has any hints on boosting my damage at range then please let me know.

Best way to fight 20k and above pirates is to keep your distance. Stay 18km or further away from them. If you get closer then that, they'll start firing their guns along with their missiles. They only seem to have 1 gun on them but if youÆre fighting 3 or more pirates their combined firepower will start to hurt.
MWD's are a must. If you happen to warp on top of them pirates activate your MWD's immediately even before dropping out of warp. There fore you shall be attaining speeds greater then 1200ms after you drop out of warp. You have a few seconds before they will lock on to you; this is more then enough time to get out of their webifier range. MWD's are also the best way to maintain your distances from the pirates.
Get weapons that have long range optimum on them. You only have a few choices for weapons that grant an 18k or higher optimum range. Use modules if need be to increase your effective gun ranges. It's better to constantly hit the pirates for decent damage then to go with pure power and end up missing 1/2 your shots.
Shield boosters are a must and also keep your eye on your cap energy. If it gets too low and youÆre still in the middle of the fight get ready to warp out or save some cap energy to MWD out of the attack zone. Then wait till your cap recharges and head back in to mix things up again.
Basically Range and Speed is your best bet for fighting AI Pirates.

Mhh.. not necessarily. My current setup is a Moa with 4 Anode Ions and 4 damage mods in the low slot. I can kill all serpentis and gurista spawns just fine.

My setup for NPC ________________ HI-Slots
1 x Prototype 1 Gauss Gun 1 250mm, 1 x Compressed Coil 250mm, 1 x Anode Particle Ion Blaster, 1 x Anode Particle Neutron Blaster, 2 x XR-3200 Missile Bays
(The 250's hold uranium for long-range and then I swap to antimatter when they're at about 15km. The Anodes always hold antimatter. The XR-3200's hold heavy missiles (thunderbolt/widowmaker)
MED-Slots 2 x LiF Fueled Boosters, 1 x Orion Tracking Computer 1, 1 x Med Converse Shield Booster
LOW-slots 1 x RCU 1, 3 x Insulated Magnetic Stabilizer.
I could do with 3 Vortex 2's and another Proto Gauss Gun to complete my setup but I still do about 90-100 dmg at 27km with Uranium. When I swap to antimatter I hit for harder damage but at more variable amounts (not sure why).

lots of different set ups
ok, im soloing 30k spawns now (angels and guristas) they die the same :)
im using: 1x gauss 250mm 1x 250mm rail 1x smartbomb (for missile defence) 1x m-12 for missiles i pick up looted :)
2x arc jets 1x med shield extender 1x med shield boost
4x cap managers
i can hit at ranges 0f 30-35k although i stick at 20-25k using thorium charges.
spawns for guristas are as i originally stated and angels tend to be 4x10k & 1x30k.
distance and speed is the key :)
