LOL sweet. Verizon is laying fiber in my area but that is still in the mbit range and they do plan to do digital TV content.
What this article fails to mention is that at that speeds your I/O bus will be the bottleneck for most IDE based systems. I think it is somewhere around 3KB/second. I wonder what SATA/PATA will give you.
I read a guy's webpage who lived in Finland I think. His town didn't have broadband, so he got most of the people in town to fund a broadband project and they did most of the work themselves, laying fiber, contructing a small building to house switch equipment, and connecting to the Telco trunk. He was getting insane speeds but was limited by his PC's hardware and network. Tough to be him.

Actually it being symmetric i believe makes it have the same upload and download speeds, hence ADSL and SDSL... but i could just be talking crap...

Nah you're right, it says symetric so it's 1gbps up and downstream.

For 18 months i went to a shcool that gave me in-room Gigabit fiber optic access.
The lan speeds were indeed limited by only by computer hardware (HD read/write speeds)
The uplink to the internet was an "OC-12" as they say . . . my upload and download were symetrica, and the speeds were absolutely insane! there was nothing i couldn't host, and i couldn't max out the download/upload bandwidth caps if i tried.

Holy crap, that's cheap! That's like 9Mb per ú1. I wish ISPs here in the UK were offering those kind of prices, specially since I'm on a 300Kb connection (would be about 3 pence per month). Here a 1Gb connection would probably set you back somewhere in the order of a grand or two per month.
I want one too.

aol are releasing 10mb next year, i heard or maybe another company who cares anyways, the japaneese certainlly don't.
do you thing that speed could speed up skill traning, hehe
imagine skill training had sth to do with ur internet speed that if u had 56k it will take u 1 year to train 1msp.
and only 1 day with 1gps. well we can only dream

on our poor contry called Portugal we have 16Mb connection
in any case, im upgrading from 512Kb to 2Mb for free soon!
