I love it when a humorous post gets internal attention before I can send off an e-mail request for information. Here's the 411 from the big dog, Oveur himself. Oh, and the infamous Redundancy also chimed in with his 2 ISK.
The problem with the billboards and their content is that currently, nobody from the game design department is attached to them. Also, a management suite that will exchange the pictures fetched by the billboard code is lacking.
Creating the management suite wouldn't be too difficult, but the management of renting, approving content, etc., designing/coding the suite and the time needed are not high on the current priority list. We could bump the priority higher, but that would mean things like Jump Drives, Titans, Carriers, etc. would be bumped back.
I can look into doing that, but only on the promise that if any players complain about the shift in priority, I can send all the complaints to your personal mail boxes. Sound like a deal?
Oh, geez. I figured I was on all the dev's ignore list. I'll be more careful with what I suggest from now on. ---

I really like face-lifter's suggestions, and while I wouldn't push them ahead of titans in the development queue, I'll still add the following:
Pricing starts at 1M isk to run an ad for one day in one region for 1 minute per hour. On day-regions that see over 90% usage (54 or more slots are filled for a given day in a given region) the price rises by 5% per week. On day-regions that see under 60% usage (36 or fewer slots are filled) the price falls 10% per week.
To expand a 1 minute slot to a 2-minute slot requires a level 2 marketing agent and costs 4 times as much. To expand to a 3 minute slot requires a level 3 marketing agent and costs 9 times as much. To expand to a 4 minute slot requires a level 4 marketing agent and costs 16 times as much.
Oh yes, and this gets my vote

yep, that seems like an ok thing..
but as for the pricing - id do it more like the labslots/factory thing... have a base price per slot - and when all slots are taken, the price goes up - when there are too many empty slots, the price goes down... so in some regions the price would skyrocket :) in others it would be dirt cheap :)
And i like it having to go through agents :) -----

Back on track with the origional topic....
Whilst it may be difficult to impliment a system where adds can be placed on the bill boards themselves, could we have a text only service implimented inside stations??
Perhaps 100,000 credits a week buys you 100 words or something? I'd guess it needs to be that high to stop pointless spamming..

Well, if they can knock up a quick management suite, then surely the easiest answer is to employ some slave labo.. excuse me, volunteers? ;)
Perhaps if you want it that much, send CCP some money to pay for a devs overtime and voilah. :) -

I like Face Lifter's implementation of how this could be done. To make content control easier it could start with the facial image or the corp-logo of the poster combined with submitted text. CCP already has a filter on the forum, so they should be able to put one on billboard-ad text submissions, they can make it scrolling themselves. This would make a great way to promote you or your corp. |

I like this. As a trader I'd be putting ads up to raise awareness - For example, I might be the only trader selling a specific item in a system, so on the billboard as you enter XXX system, you might, for example see:
" XL Shield Boosters IIs for sale in this system, limited quantities for 7 days only "
or
" Heading for the Deadspace complex? Dont forget to stock up on Torpedos and defenders at XXX V1 Federation Navy Testing station"
The possibilities are almost endless - in low sec systems you could post warnings to stay out, or jsut for the benefit of potential gankees and there's always the option of Boasting for all you piratey types
" I WTFPWNed BIG DOGGY in a battle badger at this gate MAHAHAHAHAH " etc..........

Us programmers are a oppressed race.
Hang on, yet more evidence that CCP are a bunch of slavers. Death to slavery! Rebel all developers of CCP , join us and free our brothers. -

CCP could sell placement on these to RL firms. A 12k people regular captive audience of sci-fi fans / gamers is a nice little target audience. Especially for nche companies.
That has to be worth a bit of advertising revenue. I am sure Nvidia or another graphics card manufacturer would pay a thousand or so to advertise "occular implants", maybe sci-fi channels would pay to advertise themselves.
With a good pitch CCP could get a nice little ad revenue flowing in via this channel. If not it's just a few hours wasted sending emails to marketing depts.
(5% of monthly net ad income should do as my cut thanks.)

That would really kill immersion. I don't want to be cruising along the Lonetrek corridor and have to look at ads for the latest Star Wars film. All content on them would have to be in-character if they get opened to the public.

You didn't get all the "Crash" I mailed to you to get around that annoying habit you devs have devloped? Oh well, Concord must have ganked it in transit. ------------------------------------- You are all worthless, and weak.

As much fun as bragging might sound, unless one is advertising a mercenary corp, there seems to be little point. I normally do not speculate but I suspect that other people, including myself, would not appreciate such spam. As previously stated, the billboards need to be kept from becoming immature extensions of some of the forums and/or the cargo containers littering the space around gates with messages similar to "I WTFPWNed BIG DOGGY in a battle badger at this gate MAHAHAHAHAH."
Bashing/mudslinging, should be left to legtimate sale of services and products ("our services are better than...") save for the use of billboards in politics. Oh wow... just one more possibility... Billboards as campaign tools ("Kaleigh Doyle for President").
Final thought... Implementation of billboard ads can wait. The things that've already been placed on the development agenda (titans and the like) should definitely be given priority over this.

Just a though:
Only allow a limited selection of pre-approved graphics, animated or otherwise (saves the approval process), Have static or scrolling text that's parsed to remove banned content.
When placing the advert with your marketing agent you select the background, type in the text, and get given a preview. When you're happy.. hand over the ISK and it get's submitted.
This would limit the amount of coding work required and solve hassels with approval and transfer of graphics.

This does not sound like a bad idea.
Perhaps using a process similar to the creation of a corp logo/banner to create ads would make things easier. How does that sound?

I very much doubt these billboards were put here for players to use. More like companies advertising.

I very much like the idea, but it would have to be strictly for ingame adverts only. The proposals sound good, but it's really up to how much of a trouble it is for the devs to implement.

theres some MMOGs that use ads in games now as a way to help fund it. Anarchy online for example have sprite, music cd etc ads on billboards if you are playing on a free account. However if you are a subscriber that pay monthly you dont have to put up with ads.
