Tempest
Pros:
best long range BS bar none. 5 mids leaves more possible options 1400s hit very hard
cons:
projectiles track horribly slower than a megathron (I've heard)

that is always what I thought too, but after talking to a few seasoned megathron pilots they say the mega is either faster or more agile...meaning in a 0-60 race the mega would catch the tempest but possibly in a long term race the tempest would win.
That was news to me also.
I have only flown the mega a few times so I can't confirm that.

Tempest Pros: Highest damage volleys in the game Weapons use little cap fast Extremely versatile, 5 mids/6 lows lets you shield or armor tank, and go close range or long range 4 missile slots (some people like using missiles) Fastest locking BS Cons: Low DPS Isn't good at armor OR shield tanking (though i can do both) Low targeting range
Mega Pros: Highest damaging BS in the game Rails track better than Arty Railthron is best sniping BS, blasterthron is best close range BS Biggest tier 2 drone bay Good 7 lows for armor tanking Rails have ridiculous range Cons: Hybrids use loads of cap Outdamaged in short enagements by tempest

Megathron does more dps with both rails and blasters. Megathron is the most damage dealing ship when with a gank setup, nothing can match it.
As said, tempest is better at range, and burst damage. And is faster. It also has 5 mid slots meaning you can do alot with it and also 4 missles hardpoints.
I picked a megathron and have'vnt regretted it Thas maybe because I like dealnig out most damage.
So its up to damage or range/agility at setups. You want damage take megathron. You want weird setups and sniping take temepst. ___________________________________ Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante |

Tempest: Relatively weak DPS when using long range guns, but good DPS when using close range weapons. When both ships are trained to lv5, probably does even more damage with 6*800 and 2*cruises than a blasterthron. However, tracking for long range setups and ammo consumption of short range setups can be a problem. It's improved speed (only the Typhoon is faster) and reduced sig radius might become significatives advantages when both missiles and guns start including it for tracking or damage calculations. It's 4 missiles slots may give it a relative toughness to EW, but it also mean that a single damage mod doesn't give as much of a DPS increase than on a Mega with 7 turrets. Slot layout: if armor tanking, can't put more than one damage mod. However, the same total number of med/low slots mean that it doesn't armor tank worse than the Mega. Can shield tank just as effectively than a Raven, or near enough.
Mega: Good overall, but suffer from cap issues. Little more cap than tempest + same number of med/low slots + very significative weapon cap usage => tank less sustainable than a Tempest. Due to slot layout and turret number, can be a better gank ship than the Tempest. Better miner ship. Mega looks much better
Overall I'd say Tempest. Less vulnerable to EW and leecher setups, a little harder to hit, more flexible, and more firepower if you have a lot of points in gunnery and time to train a BS skill at IV or V.

There is no way tempests well get the nerf bat at all in the near future, they are still outdamaged by megas at both long and short range, and tank worse. Although, funnily, a good ACtempest pilot will kill a good blasterthron pilot.
Tempests only seem overpowered at the moment because of all the tempest pilots had to train up all their related skills to 5 in order to be on par with the other races, and now that Proj got boosted they have better skills than anyone else. And of course people like G who have 2/3 of all their pilots in tempests w/ 1400 IIs, who all focus fire and pwn **** :S.

Tempest does not shield tank anywhere near as good as the raven, for the simple fact that it has **** all for CPU.
It is more vulnerable to EW. Shorter target range and weaker sensor strength.
Oh and gawd, tempest doesnt outdamage a megathron at short range ever. 6 800s on a tempest are like 6 ions on a mega, except the mega can fit 7, the ions track much better on the mega and the mega can fit more damage mods. Plus the drones.
I'd say the mega beats the tempest in every category except burst damage, which is only useful in fleets.

totally agree, i laugh when someone says my minnie ships are overpowered...after more than a year of specializing in them, i'd hope it can do some decent dmg and tank well enuff

Everything has been covered more or less except I do want to echo that nothing outdamages a blasterthron at optimals.... Although a good hunting partner for a such a blasterthron might well be a Tempest in 800s. It prompted me to think a bit about teaming on of my throns with a tempest with 800s instead of the usual 1400s it has now.
Also, I'm surprised none of the thron folks mentioned the CON to the thron is achieving optimal range in a given encounter as quickly as possible. It's tough sometimes and mwd-ing or AB-ing across 10 to 20kms isn't fun whilst soaking damage and dealing little yourself. Typically cov ops or killing on wayward side of gates as enemy ccomes out of gatecloak will solve these issues though.

I like both. I set up outside the box though. I don't expect others who think inside the box to have the same success. For instance fitting 7x Ion Blasters on a Mega or only using 1400mm on a Tempest. Try new things. Adapt. Overcome. Either of these BS are capable of killing all other BS, plus themselves and eachother.
Tempest with 1400mm is the flavor of the month right now. I'll go out with my friends and we'll have four Tempests and mine will be the only one not with 1400mm.

Come to think of it, this POS stuff and the time I put into it has kept me from refitting one of my tempest with 800s. One of the things I love about Eve is the ability to "experiment" with crazy stuff.
/me ponders putting the POS on the shelf for a bit

My "crazy" setup, I'm pretty sure, out DOTs any 5x 1400mm setup, it also shield tanks like hell. I'm not giving it out though (anymore- too many people are skeptical and don't believe something is good so I've revoked my crazy setup giving away privaleges). It still uses projectiles and the secret is a cap booster and a full rack of damage mods. Guess and get a cookie.

The tempest IS less vulnerable to EW because it can spam 4*FoF cruises salvoes, regardless of little differences in targettting range or sensor strength. That is enough firepower to force to retreat an EW scorpion or raven, which would be poorly tanked, if tanked at all. The Mega can put out 4 more heavy drones (more like 3, since few ppl have the skills to control 10 of them). So what? 3 heavy drones would be a mere inconvenience for a cruiser, let alone a BS.
DPS: (assuming every weapon fit without need of CPU/grid upgrade) at BS lv5, 800mm DPS (39 CPU and 2000 Grid)= 0.57*44= 25.1 DPS. Ion blaster DPS (60 CPU and 2000 Grid)= 0.521*48= 25.002 DPS. with missile launcher operation V and torpedoes IV, a single siege launcher has a DPS of (450*1.2)/(0.75*24)= 30. So, 6*800+2 sieges deals more DPS than 7*Ions+1 siege.
About tracking, you may have a point, but adding a tracking comp II on hte tempest can make them equivalent. you lose in cap recharge rate, but the very low cap usage from weapons more than make up for it.

I disagree. CPU is not a concern unless you're running Siege on your Tempest. Thinking you need to use your last two slots on a Tempest for Siege is a flawed way of thinking. If you don't have torps filling your bay then you have plenty of room for the thing that gives the Tempest the shield boosting edge: Cap Boosters. I'd really rather not give out my Tempest setup but it was put together specifically to kill Ravens. What I found was it kills everything else just as good too.
